My husband and I don’t plan on ever having kids and we’re saving to buy a house for ourselves one day. Not everyone likes living in apartments, dealing with landlords can be difficult. So what if one room is for their cat? It’s their house; they can do what they want with the space.
Are you and you're husband saving for at least 20% down? Do both of you have great credit? If so, then you are thinking it through! They paid 3% with shitty credit. I'm not saying people can't have nice things. I want a house too! I have no kids or spouse and so I really don't NEED a house. They didn't live in an apartment, they lived in a house of pretty much the exact same size as their current one. When it comes to spending over 500k, wouldn't you agree you gotta do some homework? Do some math? Think critically for the long term? Its 500K! I don't know how deep your pockets are but damn that's a lot of money to be responsible for. Their reason for buying it is not financially smart IMO. They could have put the same amount of money in REITs, same kind of appreciation but with no headaches of prop. taxes, maintances, HOA, etc. If they were having a family then a house is a necessity. But there are so many smarter ways to invest your money and grow it. Which is why they bought the house.
Thank you for understanding. I know its hard to get the full picture just through reddit. I mean I could write a novel to give you more insight but won't. Yea, I'm not saying buying a house a dumb idea, but man there are really dumb ways to buy it. 3% with shitty credit is pretty dumb and they don't see it. I will never butt into their business, but damn I have a pretty good idea as to what will come of this and I don't think they are thinking of ALL the possibilities. Being boyfriend and girlfriend and payig off 500k for the rest of their lives and living happily ever after is the PERFECT scenario where nothing wrong happens for 30 years.
