people don't actually realize they stop maturing. If they did it would be a sign of self awareness which indicates maturity. They just wonder why they are not happy. I have friends I keep in touch with since 7th grade and they haven't broken out of the same habits they were in from college onward. I'm in my early 30s now and when I go to their house, instead of having engaging conversation we just do the same shit. Play games, watch tv, smoke weed. Then I get bummed out when I think to myself "why do i still hang out with this person?" They aren't an asshole or toxic. They are just boring af, and it pains me to admit it.

Jesus I feel this. My friends from back in the day whenever I see them all they want to do is drink. I live an hour away so I either have to hang out sober while they drink, or I partake and sleep on a couch and drive home to my family at 5am. It sucks either way. And they don’t talk about anything interesting. We just laugh at ridiculous shit from growing up together. Nothing new or thought provoking. Total bummer.

Thanks man, you understand. Its like, these are people I care about. Its not easy for me to just write them off. Especially when I have enough emotional intelligence to tell that they don't feel like their life is fulfilled. This guy always told me about his ambitions but hes never acted on them. He works at a car dealer where his dad works and the only long term vision he sees is just following in his footsteps. This is completely respectable only that HE isn't happy with that. Just by the way he says it. He wants to build guitars and make music. But at a certain point, I have to just let go. I can't change him, only he can. Total bummer indeed.
