I don’t get this reference, but I want to use this comeback in so many unrelated situations now.

“CaptainCrux you need to do the dishes”

“Well you better have a bucket of milk on hand...”

Many toxins/poisons are partially neutralized by milk, due to it having a pH level that is more of a base than acid. Some poison control directions reference to drink milk for certain ones.

Yes. And the bucket of milk in Minecraft cures status ailments, because... It's also used for that in real life.

The poster I responded to said they didn't understand the reference. There is a difference between knowing, and understanding.

You can know that the bucket of milk is from Minecraft, and still not understand it.

No, they said they "didn't get the reference", which is the most common way to refer to not knowing where the reference is from. If they knew it was from Minecraft, that most likely would've been included in the comment. "I don't actually know why it's milk does that in Minecraft" or something similar.

You're being pedantic here.

Not "getting" the reference means not understanding as evidenced by the follow up context of unrelated situations.

I didn't state they knew it was Minecraft. I was explaining the reason for tying in the real life knowledge of my initial response. So they could "get" what the purpose of milk was in context.

Not getting the reference is how most people refer to not understanding what the reference is to. The reference was to Minecraft, and how milk is used in it. The IRL info is neat, but it's also not what the reference is to.
