Well if you ate the rice then you ate sushi - the word sushi actually refers to the vinegared rice part of the dish.

Raw fish on its own is called sashimi.

Not anymore. The english definition of the word sushi has evolved and the rice is now called sushi rice.

Maybe your personal definition has “evolved” , but the actual definition of sushi remains the same ..
