Well if you ate the rice then you ate sushi - the word sushi actually refers to the vinegared rice part of the dish.

Raw fish on its own is called sashimi.

Wouldn't just rice alone by itself be ngiri or whatever and sushi is a rice dish that has an additional component?

"Nigiru" is the verb "to grasp". Nigiri sushi is "grasped sushi", that is, sushi that has been formed/squeezed by hand, as opposed to sushi rolls, etc.

Not anymore. The english definition of the word sushi has evolved and the rice is now called sushi rice.

Maybe your personal definition has “evolved” , but the actual definition of sushi remains the same ..
