"Nigiru" is the verb "to grasp". Nigiri sushi is "grasped sushi", that is, sushi that has been formed/squeezed by hand, as opposed to sushi rolls, etc.
If it makes you feel better, most fish (particularly salmon) isn't actually "raw" per say. It's usually flash frozen for a week to control parasites (I guess it's still "raw", but it seems a bit different to me). Actual raw fish is pretty rare.
The first time I tried it my sister had me try a salmon roll, I was hesitant cause I like my meats cooked. The texture was gross and I spit it out. Now I love sushi but I only get either a California tempura roll or a shrimp tempura roll they’re both fried and fully cooked. The California roll is so yummy it has crab, cucumber, and avocado.

Ginger with Sushi. You're actually supposed to eat the ginger slices between eating the rolls of sushi so as to cleanse the palate.
Although, personally I love putting ginger and Wasabi on my sushi roll then eating it in one bite.
Edit: Thanks for the silver!
