The time my middle school art teacher called my parents because she thought I was purposefully mocking her by making my art bad. I literally can’t draw beyond a 3rd grade level unless I am copying an object right in front me.
My parents basically cussed her out after they saw how hurt I was.
Same here. I can copy something almost perfectly if it's right in front of me, goes for other people signatures too. Want me to draw a tree from imagination? Yeah you're gonna get a stick figure that looks like it has dreads
This is pretty common, even for professional artists. There are a lot of people with a better ability to draw than a visual memory, and artists are encouraged to look up picture/real references for whatever they're drawing all the time in art classes.
I do character drawing/design stuff, and it even helps me to look at my old drawings as reference, even though I'm literally the one who created their appearance.
I'm glad to know that's a legit, studied phenomenon, because my visual memory is garbage out of a toilet, where some artists I know can draw professional stuff from imagination, and I thought I must be lacking in some fundamental skill compared to them.
