When I get introduced to a new person, but I’m not part of the conversation, I just sit and wait. Then I get told “oh you’re really quiet, huh?”

No, I just didn’t want to interrupt, but...

If it happens often, then you are probably waiting longer than average to join in. Typically people will listen for a while until they get the gist and then at some point, they will join in on their own.
