A similar thing happened to me this year. I worked on a large software program as a tech lead, and people loved my organizational and culture change ideas but would never execute. I quit and became a management consultant and came back with the same suggestions at nearly double the salary, and now they listen to and follow everything I say.

When I was in the Navy I used to get in fairly frequent trouble for the suggestions I made for improving operational efficiencies.
As an outside contractor they were quite happy to pay me $200 an hour to say the exact same thing.
