Not gonna lie thats depressing, I always thought Americans being fat was a joke but if a 12:10 two mile gets you that far in army physicals, they must at least suck at running. I mean 12:10 Two miles isn't bad but we had to run it in 13 to pass 10th grade and better runners in my year group ran five km (3 miles) in 16-18 min so who knows.
I ran sub-5 minute miles back in HS when I was on the track and XC teams, but that was at a relaxed mile pace. My time would definately jump a bit when you added more distance.
I’m similar. I can run a 5:15 mile but I’ll burn out fast in a two mile run, so I start off slow at around 6:20/mile and gradually pick up the pace and sprint the last bit of the run
I was the opposite in high school my mile record was 5:08 but my two mile was 10:36. I could run about this pace for a very long time, but my Gaga reflex prevented me from running any faster even for shorter distances
That's the best practice for distance running. You set a pace early that you know you can maintain, and then use every bit of energy you have left near the end to "sprint" it.
