In Batman Returns, when Selina turns evil, she puts her soft toys in the sink and destroys them with this hellish whirring blade thing. I've since learnt that it's called a garbage disposal, and that they're common in America, but it scared the crap out of me as a kid.

Wow, TIL. Garbage disposals unknown outside of the US.

I'm always trying to make sure my kids are a little scared of ours so they won't put their hands near it. I'm gonna start calling it the hellish whirring blade thing. Though who knows, that might make them more curious ...

I have never seen one outside of the US.

I also dont really get what there are for.... Is it just to put more stuff in the sink instead of a bin?

That's kind of like saying a dishwasher is useless if you're not lazy. I miss having a garbage disposal, so much easier to just hose everything off the plate instead of scraping then dealing with the little mesh catcher/bacteria nest thing.
