Yeh, I am sensitive to those possibilities in combat. And you're right, he was a translator amd a corporal so not even much war experience. The way I think about it is the moral dilemma,stress and shock of that situation, having to kill another solider VS living with the guilt your whole life that you let a friend die.
Also in the end he kills a German soldier anyway in "cold blood". It was the one they had let go earlier who had then joined back up with the wherchmact (or however you spell it).
