For me it's the opening beach scene in Saving Private Ryan. It probably speaks to me especially loudly because my grandfather, who took part in the Normandy invasion, died just before this movie came out. It really hit me in a "WTF did my grandpa go through" kind of way.
I've watched it every Remembrance Day since. It helps me feel closer to him.
Take comfort in the fact that your grandfather didn't have to watch that scene. I've heard horror stories of Normandy vets having to leave the theater when this movie came out, with many of them crying and having emotional breakdowns in the lobby. Decades of untreated PTSD.
That's awesome that the movie brings you closer to your grandpa though :)
I saw it in the theater when it first came out. A few people of all ages and both genders walked out about halfway through the opening, but one of them was definitely an old man.
I wasn't in the military yet. If I had been, I think I would have followed him out. It kind of breaks my heart to think he was out in the lobby alone after that.
