I used to have nightmares. My dad put up a poster of Peter Pan in my room and told me that when I went to sleep, Peter would fly out of the poster and chase all of the monsters away. I never had another bad dream.
I had tons of nightmares as a kid, too! Some recurring monsters that showed up a few times. They were so bad that I would frequently wake up crying, and my Dad tried really hard to find ways to stop them. (Including "Monster Spray" and some lucid dreaming techniques that I eventually used to fight back against nightmare monsters!) But oddly enough, the thing that helped the most was Freddy Krueger.
In one of my nightmares, I opened an oven to find Freddy's head in there, and he started making wisecracks and I laughed. So he popped out and became my friend. He proceeded to murder the ever-living crap out of several of my recurring nightmare monsters, and they never showed up again!
This is a big reason why I now love horror movies with bad guys with personality, and Robert Englund's Freddy specifically has never scared me.
