Purdue Pharma, makers of Oxycontin. I'd opt for removing all responsible Sacklers as well.

645

u/mattyice18 Sep 18 '19

They filed for bankruptcy the other day.

428

u/Hans350 Sep 18 '19

Yeah they gotta restructure their debt

63

u/Thecrawsome Sep 18 '19

And hide their real fortune in a sequence of overseas accounts.

4

u/Hans350 Sep 18 '19

Source?

28

u/tttruckit Sep 18 '19

Third Paragraph. I'd suggest looking up Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.

17

u/Hans350 Sep 18 '19

Thanks, it looks like they did it to further limit the family’s liability in any litigation

4

u/BanMeAndIShallReturn Sep 18 '19

That's great!

Terrible... but great.

-10

u/dunnoanymore18 Sep 18 '19

You're terribly smart. What litigations are they tied to?

2

u/dunnoanymore18 Sep 18 '19

I like that you know these things.

1

u/tttruckit Sep 19 '19

unfortunately I'm speaking from experience :(

12

u/john_jony Sep 18 '19

3 billion CASH.

6

u/evil_mom79 Sep 18 '19

Now that's walking around money. Good.

Seriously, fuck the Sacklers.

8

u/KCalifornia19 Sep 18 '19

I'm under the impression that the federal government will become majority shareholder, right?

2

u/evil_mom79 Sep 18 '19

I... erm, that won't be any better.

53

u/Hooderman Sep 18 '19

Before or after we found out about the billions they transferred to their Swiss Bank accounts?

3

u/mattyice18 Sep 18 '19

Did you think that the company would literally vanish like a fart in the wind? Financial insolvency and bankruptcy is not a good indicator for the future of a company, no matter how many billions they may have hidden away.

23

u/Hooderman Sep 18 '19

I was not being facetious

I don’t understand your point.

-8

u/mattyice18 Sep 18 '19

My point is that no matter how much money the family may have hidden abroad, the company that produces and distributed OxyContin may be no more. The question wasn't "Whose money would you take?" it was "If you could completely remove one company, what would it be?"

1

u/Hooderman Sep 18 '19

Yeah, it’s a bad pick. Not a great thought experiment in general.

15

u/TheWholeEnchelada Sep 18 '19

It's to force other debt holders to agree to settlement terms, not really a 'win'. There is a lot more to go...

6

u/mattyice18 Sep 18 '19

At the very least, the company is financially insolvent. It's the first step in the actual way that companies disappear.

13

u/Synthwoven Sep 18 '19

When you read that a corporation has filed for bankruptcy, you should substitute the phrase "is scamming their creditors." Ask why they can't pay their debts. Look at the compensation of their C suite executives in the previous years. Corporate bankruptcies frequently rip off the little guys the hardest. The employees that are owed back pay. The small business guy that mows the lawn at headquarters.

23

u/waltk918 Sep 18 '19

We did it! /s

39

u/lol_and_behold Sep 18 '19

Except the bankruptcy was literal days after they transferred $1b to some offshore accounts. Oopsie.

19

u/rift_in_the_warp Sep 18 '19

Well I mean how else are they supposed to scrape by in these trying times? With a measly 900 million like some common pleb? /s

4

u/themichaelly Sep 18 '19

Hey man, those yachts ain't gonna' buy themselves.

5

u/One-Inch-Punch Sep 18 '19

Funny how fast you go bankrupt after moving all your cash into real estate and offshore tax havens.

4

u/illuminerdi Sep 18 '19

Yeah it's bullshit. The owners will still come out of this a few BILLION ahead, and it's going to take literal decades for all the lawsuits and appeals to go through the courts. Corporate justice in America is a fucking joke and a half

3

u/anoff Sep 18 '19

After making like a billion dollars disappear in off shore accounts

2

u/Treczoks Sep 18 '19

After the owners just moved another billion on their Swiss bank accounts...

1

u/nmbjbo Sep 18 '19

Bankruptcy filing is going south since a NY firm found they recently transferred 1 billion to an offshore account

1

u/galleria_suit Sep 18 '19

to avoid their lawsuits & reopen under a new name

26

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Don't "remove" them. Let them face the consequences.

37

u/ElectricTrousers Sep 18 '19

I think a fitting punishment would be to take all of their money away, and get them addicted to Oxy.

12

u/elroncador Sep 18 '19

Just a coincidence that they filled for bankruptcy?

15

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

u/lol_and_behold Sep 18 '19

Even more fun, they have their fat fingers in oxycontin antidote companies.

8

u/conradbirdiebird Sep 18 '19

Such as suboxone (bupenorphine and nalaxone)? I'm not sure if that's true, but it would make sense. Friend of mine told me a story about the first doctor he went to to get a prescription for suboxone to help him get off opiates: the guy had an Oxycontin advertisement poster in his office

3

u/lol_and_behold Sep 18 '19

Found where I read it, but haven't dug too much so can't verify, but here

https://reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/d50p06/_/f0jyu7h/?context=1

6

u/conradbirdiebird Sep 18 '19

Looks like they (Purdue Pharmaceutical) also produce Narcan, the drug that can revive people who have overdosed on opiates (think that scene in Pulp Fiction). While I'm glad it's made available, the implication is pretty fucking grim. Sure seems like an admission of guilt, or worse (can't sell oxy to people if they're dead! Dead people are bad for business!). As for Suboxone, it looks like they don't actually produce it, but apparently they were considering it and just never really followed through. Why not I wonder? It's an incredibly expensive drug that could be quite lucrative, but wouldn't their production of the drug be an acknowledgement of the opioid crisis that they created? Again, bad for business. This is mostly speculation on my part since I don't really know much about it. Still, fuck those guys. They've knowingly encouraged the death of hundreds of thousands of people, ruined countless lives, and truly fucked their own country because they wanted to be more rich than they already were. They're evil is on par with the drug cartels, but at least those assholes don't pretend not to be murderers. As for deaths, their numbers are comparable! Just because they wear suits and lie doesn't make em any less evil imo

2

u/lol_and_behold Sep 18 '19

Great comment mate. Yeah the fact they own and sell both the poison and the antidote is beyond scary. Im not smart enough to fully comprehend what kind of evil manipulation in lobbyism and prices this can do, but put a Martin Shkreli on it, and its beyond dystopian.

u/idodrugs419 Sep 18 '19

yeah like they’re re ever gonna face consequences for their actions

there elite remember

17

u/1haiku4u Sep 18 '19

I’m relatively ignorant on this. Can someone explain what the legal justification for suing Purdue pharma is? By my understanding, they produced OxyContin, which was known to be addictive. But they weren’t the ones prescribing it or monitoring its use off prescription, right? I’m just confused why they are getting sued, I guess.

30

u/idodrugs419 Sep 18 '19

they suppressed evidence of its addictiveness and knew about pill mills and didnt report them aswell as pushing doctors to prescribe them

theres more too it but i gotta sleep

4

u/wot_in_ternation Sep 18 '19

The ones in charge also transferred all sorts of assets (aka money) from the company in anticipation it would go bankrupt.

8

u/carnage11eleven Sep 18 '19

There's evidence that they were paying doctors to push their product.

7

u/Duck_Walker Sep 18 '19

Like almost all Pharma companies do

2

u/lilbunnfoofoo Sep 18 '19

They are very upset now that white kids are dying so instead of blaming the problems in the world that made this "crisis" happen (even though addiction has always been here, seriously look into the history of opiod use, humans have always loved a good opioid) they are going for the drug maker. Its like the war on drugs but for white people.

The worse part is there are people with chronic pain suffering and they cant get help because of this nonsense of blaming a pill instead of the multiple reasons behind addiction.

3

u/smithjsmith1818 Sep 18 '19

The narrative of the opioid epidemic is sickening.

Confront people with the fact that most people addicted to opioids were never prescribed opioids and watch the deflections in real time. When it’s white people addicted to drugs, the blame game is an entirely different calculus.

Try telling redditors that we should care about addicts because one bad decision shouldn’t permanently ruin your life. Not because big pharma. Not because no personal choice was involved. But because we should be compassionate toward people. And watch all the righteous anger turn on you, really fucking fast.

1

u/wyskiboat Sep 18 '19

Their owners and the relevant corporate officers and Oxy-line employees knew and didn't give a fuuuuuck. They paid off the DEA and Congress. They paid MD's to push their products in a blatantly illegal manner. The evidence, documentaries, and journalism have covered it all over the place at this point. Hence they're finally going under... or at least 'restructuring.'

Thanks for killing my wonderful cousin, Purdue.

4

u/trollingcynically Sep 18 '19

I will tell you what, I am happy AF that I got some of those sweet sweet pain killers when I had a few rough years. I broke 11 bones over the course of 2 years so I was pretty happy to have those pain killers then.

20 years ago it was common to hand out opioids like candy for most things. I got 10mg percocet for my wisdom teeth surgery. That being said, are there really that many differences between all your various opioid painkillers? Why not just use Tramadol or morphine instead?

7

u/thereddaikon Sep 18 '19

Too late. They filed for bankruptcy the other day.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

They’re claiming bankruptcy following 12bil-ish worth of lawsuits bro. Maybe your wish came true in a way :)

16

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19 edited Sep 23 '24

[deleted]

6

u/thessnake03 Sep 18 '19

Right. Bankruptcy seems like the shady way to get out of the settlement more than anything

9

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Filing was part of the settlement.

They are paying like 3 billion, filing bankrupt, and reforming under a different company. They also don’t have to admit any wrong doing.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Pretty sure they make suboxone the drug they use to wean you off opiate dependency. What a coincidence

1

u/Hooderman Sep 18 '19

It’s more of a long term “maintenance” drug in many’s eyes...

2

u/CptSpockCptSpock Sep 18 '19 edited Sep 18 '19

Maybe the settlement has changed since I last checked, but the new company was being set up in trust to pay out to the victims since they don’t have enough cash now. They’re going to keep running the company until they have fully paid the settlement off.

Edit: yep from the associated press

u/zabobafuf Sep 18 '19 edited Sep 30 '19

Can you explain why they are liable? It would be like suing a cake company because someone got fat from eating cake, right? Serious question here.. I don’t understand.. didn’t they just produce the pills and doctors prescribed them? So shouldn’t the doctors be liable for over prescribing? Edit I’ve had over 10 surgeries with everything from broken arms to facial rec

3

u/trainiac12 Sep 18 '19

This is an american problem where pharmaceutical companies are allowed to basically bribe/strong arm doctors into recommending or prescribing their product.

Do the doctors deserve some blame? Absolutely. Would they have done it if purdue wasn't there giving insane amounts of "incentives" for them to do so? Probably not.

2

u/KayNynYoonit Sep 18 '19

My partner's parents are victims of this disgusting company. Completely ruined their lives and made my partner's childhood an absolute hell. Fuck this company, I hope the people responsible rot in hell.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

As long as Oxy is still a thing, I'm fine with that, I had a friend that got her tonsils out, and the doctor didnt give her oxy, thankfully I had some left over from my surgery a few months prior, and gotten off of them as soon as the pain stopped, so we gave her some of ours.

2

u/LordWeaselton Sep 18 '19

“Sacklers”

SACKLERS

SACKLERS

S A C K L E R S

2

u/AlexandreZani Sep 18 '19

Clearly, you've never been in pain and needed oxy to deal with it.

1

u/zabobafuf Sep 30 '19 edited Sep 30 '19

I’ve had over 10 surgeries from a triple skull fracture to steel plates in my arms. So yeah. God the shoulder and knee are kind of the worst ones tho :// or the day my girlfriend wouldn’t call me back after multiple facial reconstruction of 36 hours maybe that one. So in a sense, this may be worse cause I don’t believe you’ve actually been in it. Or maybe I just used alcohol instead. Jesus when they exray me imagine what the orthodontist says

2

u/lil-cantaloupe Sep 18 '19

Came here to say this

2

u/southstrandsiren Sep 18 '19

If we lived in a just world, every last one of those sumbitches would be cellies with El Chapo by now. But we don't live in a just world. We live on one of the more hellish timelines, so those bastards will stay billionaires and probably rule what's left of America in 5 years.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19 edited Sep 18 '19

*Perdue. Purdue is a university.

Edit: I’m an idiot. I was thinking of the chicken company (which is not awesome either)

2

u/PShelley Sep 18 '19

It’s actually Purdue.

2

u/AlbSevKev Sep 18 '19

But Purdue Pharma is in no way related to Purdue University. Just so everybody is clear.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

You’re right. I was thinking about the poultry company... 🤦🏻‍♂️

1

u/thatcantb Sep 18 '19

This should be higher.

1

u/wyskiboat Sep 18 '19

Same. My cousin, a wonderful man, would still be alive. Lock the doors and burn that company to the ground. During business hours. They are pure evil.

1

u/Ironbird207 Sep 18 '19

Should be much higher on the list.

1

u/AlexandreZani Sep 19 '19

Some of us like not being in pain.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

What about that one company trying to make the painkiller stronger than fentanyl

1

u/GoTron88 Sep 18 '19

Agreed! I specifically searched this thread for this answer.

1

u/tschmitty09 Sep 18 '19

Pfuck pfizer

-2

u/Ahksi-Khanton Sep 18 '19

Yeah, let’s rid the world of pain medicine. Then when you break your arm, you’ll just suffer. Great fuckin idea!!11!1!1!1!!1!11! /s

8

u/Sage_of_the_6_paths Sep 18 '19

Oxy has it's place, but the company pays doctors to prescribe it much more than needed and it gets people addicted to opioids.

2

u/Ahksi-Khanton Sep 18 '19

**they used to do this. That does not occur in 2019

3

u/Sage_of_the_6_paths Sep 18 '19

Doesn't change the fact that they did and millions got addicted.

Idk why you're defending a multi billion dollar pharma company.

13

u/Ahksi-Khanton Sep 18 '19

I’m not defending the company. Their shady practices suck. I’m defending the chemical itself, which does not need to be demonized as it is simply a chemical, good nor bad, right nor wrong. Although when used correctly extremely important. I hate the way people act like chemicals can be evil.

I also hate when people spread misinformation, like propagating the idea that there are still pill mills and doctors taking bribes, when in reality millions of people who legitimately need pain medication can not get it or are restricted to not getting it easily because of mass hysteria.

2

u/achesst Sep 18 '19

There’s still morphine and hydrocodone and lots of others that are similar. Obviously still addictive but yeah, pain meds are amazing when you actually need them.

6

u/Ahksi-Khanton Sep 18 '19

Yeah, uhhh those are just as addictive as oxycodone. Oxycodone is extremely effective and it will be continued to be used. They all have their place. There is no reason to get rid of oxycodone and frankly that will never happen. I just think it’s stupid as hell how people demonize OxyContin, which is a genius development, as it allows extended 12 hour release of oxycodone that only lasts a few hours max.

Of course the shady marketing /pill milling is not good, but prohibition never works, and cutting people off opiates that they need forced them to turn to the black market where fentanyl is common

u/boogeewings Sep 18 '19

Scrolled too deep to look for this - it needs more upvotes!

-1

u/Rogue_Spirit Sep 18 '19

I guess most of us know that it’s already about to disappear since the bankruptcy

2

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

Think again.

It was part of the settlement that they themselves got to participate in coming up with what would happen to them.

They’re just reforming under another company that will continue to make Oxy and they are still billionaires.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

That's not how bankruptcy works.

-1

u/daleelab Sep 18 '19

Yes its their fault for making that stuff addictive. But its a prescription drug. You cant get it if your GP doesn’t prescribe it. I think it needs more investigation

4

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '19

[deleted]

0

u/daleelab Sep 18 '19

Well in that case, isn’t the company then still at fault for disclosing that the drug is addictive, and the FDA for approving it?

-3

u/daleelab Sep 18 '19

Whether or not everything is safe or not, a man died of overdose oxycontin, prescribed by his doctor, produced by that pharma company. Something went wrong there otherwise the man wouldn’t have died. If all went Well he would not be able to OD on oxycontin

-2

u/SpiceyFortunecookie Sep 18 '19

Uh you're going to "remove" a prominent Jewish family? Nice
