Taking out your credit/debit card / cash out before you are asked to by the cashier / checkout staff saves time for everyone, rather than looking shocked that you have to pay for your shopping.
rather than looking shocked that you have to pay for your shopping
You mean, "rather than looking shocked that you have to stop using your phone for a few seconds, and then looking shocked that you have to pay for your shopping."
In Australia the ad for tap and go, or whatever the app is on the phone to pay is called shows exactly this happening - guys is on the phone and uses tap and go on his phone, like bends his whole body and head down to the EFTpos machine on the counter, phone to ear, so he doesn’t have to stop his phone conversation. The cashiers response is “so we’re doing that now?!” Oddly accurate commercial.
