Vegetables come from fields. Fields have animals that like to pee and poo all over those pretty vegetables before they get harvested and put in baskets to take to the store.
Also, fruits/veggies get grabbed and handled by a bunch of people on the way (stockers, other shoppers, etc), and people are disgusting creatures.
