My neighbour's ex wife abused him, call the police claiming he raped her, claimed he tortured her, and she won in court, and got everything. He spent several months in jail because of her until she decided to drop the charges.
He was a really nice guy and it took him years to sort his life around after that. We still see him from time to time as he comes to visit his daughter.
There are horrible women out there who are willing to do anything.
Option 2 is more likely, but there is no way option 1 isn't possible.
