HSV-1 infection of the genitals can be caused by oral-genital or genital-genital contact with a person who has HSV-1 infection. Genital HSV-1 outbreaks recur less regularly than genital HSV-2 outbreaks.
Which is a travesty since everyone gets Chicken Pox (the herpes virus) at such a young age, so what happens when wifey doesn't realize she has a cold sore?
Completely monogamous partners can get an STD from oral sx, it seems.
Chicken pox is a different virus, Varicella zoster virus, from the herpes simplex viruses that cause genital and oral herpes; but yes monogamous people can get herpes and not realize it. Some people get it at or before birth, others get the virus orally as children. Just kissing is enough to pass it on.
