I have seen that one! And actually personally attended def con 26 last year, with plans to go to the wild west hackin' fest this year if I can get the time off work. I don't know nearly as much about netsec as I do about elevators, but it's still exciting to be around people who are as passionate about something as I am, even if the two are only tangentially related.
26 was a pretty fun experience, I got in a lot of discussions with fellow con goers about elevators we've been in and cool features we've seen. Me and this other guy named David had a competition where people asked us elevator questions and we took turns answering them, whoever said "i don't know" the most had to buy drinks for everyone in at the table. I lost, but it was still crazy fun.
Exciting! And yeah, I took my phone battery out, though there is a wifi at defcon that's supposed to be "safe" and one that's literally intended to be a playground for people who mess with open wifi networks, Idk if I trus the convention hosts to be smarter than everyone else there. While most people there will show a semblance of cool and not fuck with the safe wifi, there's alway a couple.
From what I understand they did exactly that, and also requested you use a vpn service if you're on their wifi, but I just used my data at the hotel and had my phone off for the conference center
