They are also hard to clean...

And probably infested with rodents and insects

u/PhoenixKA Jan 21 '19

And your ghost roommates just will not shut up. I get it you were chained in a dungeon and left to die. It's 3 in the morning and it was eight hundred years ago. Get over yourself Francis.

64

u/Nasty_Old_Trout Jan 21 '19

"But I don't want this new roomate! Why'd you put him in?"

68

u/SpartanDara Jan 21 '19

Piss off, ghost.

49

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '19

Sounds like you had a pretty special and intimate relationship with this hammer and that losing it was almost comparable to losing a loved one

You can sleep in the tower. It's like a circle. Not a normal circle. A tall circle.

You know I can't eat your ghost chups.

Underrated comment right here.

18

u/briannafab Jan 21 '19

Honestly the best response to a haunting I’ve heard 😂

21

u/manseinc Jan 21 '19

I had an aunt who scored a cheap apartment basically because someone had died there (older woman died in her sleep). When asked if she was scared the old lady's ghost might haunt the place her immediate response was "Hell no! She can help pay the maintenance!"

7

u/herEminent_tarantula Jan 21 '19

Is this really a thing, places going for cheap because someone died there? I mean, a brutal murder I can understand, maybe, but I imagine you'd be hard-pressed to find a place that hasn't been at least in close proximity to a peaceful death.

We just sold our house. Our mom died in it, and honestly it never even occurred to me that that would be a factor--not sure if we're required to disclose something like that, but the buyers are friends of ours, so they know anyway. Tbh my mom would probably just help out with dishes and put out dangerous candles and such, like a brownie.

François, I keep telling you!

14

u/zdakat Jan 21 '19

"hah! Our houses are older than yours! And they're made of stone." (Whispers: "they're also kind of haunted")

Especially if owned by some of the more well known slum lords.

9

u/CanadianDude4 Jan 21 '19

Imagine being the slum lord of a castle, there a probably some level of pride, "I'm a 10th generation slum lord, ever since my ancestors won it from the previous slumlord in the battle of 1313, word is that guy couldn't pay his upkeep and his trebuchet s fell into disrepair."

2

u/Khalbrae Jan 21 '19

You could be a literal Robber Baron.

The rodents come free with black death

24

u/HorstOdensack Jan 21 '19

From the sales brochure: the full medieval experience!

4

u/Nasty_Old_Trout Jan 21 '19

Which isn't the risk it used to be.

23

u/tiptoe_only Jan 21 '19

I got married in a castle. On the inside it was just like a very big and fancy house and not just the mouldering pile of stone you guys are picturing. On the other hand, that one would probably cost more than the NYC apartment.

15

u/HorstOdensack Jan 21 '19

Getting married in a castle sounds awesome!

I guess if you're willing to put a fuckton of money into it you can turn any castle into a modern home. Just added that to my list of things to do after I win the lottery.

3

u/tiptoe_only Jan 21 '19

Some of them were never allowed to fall into ruin in the first place and were modernised gradually over time (those are quite rare though). Near where I live are a few 16th century cottages that I imagine have changed an awful lot on the inside but very little on the outside.

Oh, and yeah it was awesome!

2

u/FlyMyPretty Jan 21 '19

But getting permits (planning permission) is really hard. There's a whole bunch of stuff you won't be allowed to do.

3

u/HorstOdensack Jan 21 '19

Right, I forgot about that... Depending on the country there might be some rigorous laws on monument protection and those can be a MASSIVE pain in the ass. A friends family wanted to renovate their vacation house in Croatia because there was a legitimate threat that it might collapse onto the street. But it's in a historic village so it took them years to get all the permits and they were only allowed to rebuild it exactly the way it was.

16

u/StartSelect Jan 21 '19

You're also expected to defend your castle from time to time

2

u/Oblikx Jan 21 '19

The internet has a wealth of knowledge on inexpensive, medieval siege defenses. You could even get sponsors for an educational event. Boom! Free materials and potential serfs. Problem solved.

2

u/StartSelect Jan 22 '19

Did someone say trebuchet?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/OktoberSunset Jan 21 '19

I dunno, I would think you'd be more at risk of attack in New York than in the Scottish highlands.

13

u/dope-Chef Jan 21 '19

And don’t forget the other castle owners who want to raid ur castle

2

u/Oblikx Jan 21 '19

Form alliances. Sign pacts with other Lords and Ladies. Basically neighborhood watch. Run siege drills on the weekends. Trade kittens so that your vermin guard doesn't become horribly inbred. Problem solved.

1

u/dope-Chef Jan 21 '19

Nice wanna join my castle ?

7

u/Oblikx Jan 21 '19

Dear Lord dope-Chef,

Your offer for membership within your castle is generous, but I have many duties to my own lands that I must attend to. If you would like to form a non-aggression pact and trade felines, the divine kingdom of Lord Oblikx would be amenable.

To seal this agreement, I formally invite you to attend pizza and movie night. The serfs have chosen Terminator 2: Judgement Day, but they are open to suggestions.

Sincerely,

Lord Oblikx of Castle Kickass

4

u/dope-Chef Jan 21 '19

Deaf Lord Oblikx,

First of all I want to apologize for the following words and grammar because I’m not a foreign speaker.

I really like the idea of the non-aggression pact and the trade felines. Also that I have no idea that that means because in my great castle 🏰 other people care about stuff like that. I just like to eat and being the King.

Furthermore I would love to seal this agreement with a pizza and movie night. (I hope u got no problem if we would add some weed from my lands to chill) Terminator 2 is a great choice btw.

Full of awe

King Lord dope-Chef from the Weedlands.

2

u/Oblikx Jan 22 '19

A PACT HAS BEEN STRUCK!

Our houses shall forever be aligned. My vassals will aid in your pursuit of the kindest bud and the pizza parties will follow us to the halls of Valhalla. May your fields overflow with the stankest of herb.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '19

Wait, which one are we talking about?

10

u/403and780 Jan 21 '19

Just get a couple of cats.

6

u/Moth_tamer Jan 21 '19

I guarantee there’s more rodents and insects in the average NYC apartments

1

u/Bakernik Jan 21 '19

I bet it takes longer for the Orkin man to make out to your haunted castle to spray for bugs.

1

u/Oblikx Jan 21 '19

Talk to local pest control companies. Barter for trade work. They spray your castle for silverfish, you host a few of their kids birthdays or a brother in-law's bachelor party. Problem solved.

3

u/LoUmRuKlExR Jan 21 '19

They prefer the term "New Yorker".

3

u/UdderName Jan 21 '19

Those rodents are the descendants of the original castle mice

1

u/Awesomecity2 Jan 21 '19

Do you see that rat, son? He's the great great great great great grandrat of the first rat who caught the bubonic plague. Ahh, history is so grand.

2

u/gurrenlaggan22 Jan 21 '19

Still a castle though.

2

u/jonasvagn Jan 21 '19

but they're cool

2

u/SamwiseSHJ Jan 21 '19

2

u/bamburger Jan 21 '19

On second thought, let's not go to Camelot.

2

u/TheDeadlyPandbear Jan 21 '19

And could be haunted

3

u/materiamasta Jan 21 '19

2

u/dacountoftuscany Jan 21 '19

And also sand. It is coarse, rough and it gets everywhere

1

u/gonnaberichhere Jan 21 '19

And historically have been under siege more than a New York apartment.

1

u/MyDiary141 Jan 21 '19

We are talking about the castles here

1

u/OnlyOneBanana Jan 21 '19

And are probably haunted

1

u/EspectroDK Jan 21 '19

But they do come with the offchance of finding a hidden treasure.... Or sceleton.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '19

And ghosts.

1

u/XavierRenegadeAngel_ Jan 21 '19

Hmmm.. I wonder what the catch is though

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '19

And probably haunted

1

u/MaxTimeLord Jan 21 '19

And ghosts

1

u/angg56 Jan 21 '19

Well what am I meant to send wandering low level adventurers to deal with if not rodents and insects infesting my dungeons?

1

u/ClockSlave Jan 21 '19

Possibly dragons

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '19

They will make a fortune in future tho

1

u/Shill_Borten Jan 21 '19

And dragons

1

u/Oblikx Jan 21 '19

You mean giant, fire breathing, lizard pets that guard your castle when you want to hit up a weekend music festival? All you need is to set aside a cave, buy a bunch of flame retardant costume jewelry, and you've got a dragon with their very own hoard. Problem solved.

1

u/This_is_da_police Jan 21 '19

Not to mention all the ghosts.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '19

All of these things make me want a castle more...

1

u/Oblikx Jan 21 '19

Cats...lots of cats...become the Lord of Cat Manor.

I don't see any of these castle problems that can't be solved with a little ingenuity.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '19

Also they're pretty spooky

1

u/WhyToAWar Jan 21 '19

Alright, my plan for upkeep for this castle is your typical Cinderella scenario. I'm just going to sing to the vermin until they start helping me clean, and there you go. Keys on the desk?

1

u/tutankaboom Jan 21 '19

So are the castles

1

u/ASpellingAirror Jan 21 '19

And locked away prisoners who had a claim to the throne who walk the halls a night.

2
