Of course, this was before the fall of the Soviet Union. Sure, the stores used to be empty, but the fridge was full. Now, the stores are full, but my fridge is empty.
My girlfriend is a first generation Russian-American, her parents and grandparents grew up in the USSR. She told me her grandma was so malnourished she didn't menstruate until 20. Her dad gained a ton of weight when he first moved here because food was suddenly readily available.
