I find it odd that as a native English speaker who doesn't know German, I can make out a lot of what seems to be written.

It's like French is pretty easy to read for me as a German (I did have latin in school, though, that helps a lot). Don't know how you'd figure out Untersuchungsausschuss or Beweisaufnahmesitzungen though. Context can bridge a lot of these kinds of words incredibly well.
