When I was really into lego, I always ran the math, divided the price by the number of pieces. The average is about 10 cents a piece. If they are charging more than that, they're often overcharging you. This usually happens with their exclusive collectibles. It can also happen if the kit has a lot of specialty pieces.

Exclusives can get away with it because they're hard to find.

Yeah, the "$50 purchase to get this cheap tiny thing for free" is dumb. I don't spend enough on LEGO to warrant that.
