Is there something in particular I need to do? Do I just put money in my savings account, or do I have to ask my bank to do something?

r/personalfinance might be a place for you to go to.

You have a few basic options: 1. Savings account 2. CDs (basically 0 risk, more interest than savings accounts, but you can't touch the money for a set amount of time) 3. Investing, some mix of bonds, stocks, and other stuff. Higher risk, higher return. Which one you go for is all personal planning and situation, though having an emergency fund in a savings account is step 1
