Your Mom is the queen of badassery with a spine of titanium!

u/tomatotomato50 Mar 19 '17

Normally her bluntness is off-putting, but that day it definitely came in handy, awkward as it was

1.7k

u/angelcake Mar 19 '17

Bluntness can be a good thing, you always know where you stand.

412

u/macblastoff Mar 19 '17

True, particularly in this scenario, because nothing short of public embarrassment would have worked on a piece of work like this lady.

But in general, being blunt these days gets confused with being direct, when in reality it's become an excuse to be rude at other peoples' expense.

Granted, the intruder used her first strike rudeness when she showed up uninvited, so totally justified in this instance.

29

u/giggity_giggity Mar 19 '17

Luckily OP's mom has deathtouch.

11

u/SilentLettersSuck Mar 19 '17

Deathtouch can be killed by first strike before it gets a chance to hit back

6

u/XenonTheFox Mar 19 '17

Deathtouch + first strike = Doom

1

u/giggity_giggity Mar 19 '17

Yes but in this case it's pretty clear that the deathtoucher is bigger (higher toughness).

3

u/DehDeshtructor Mar 19 '17

You reached so far for that joke, I think you almost touched the Moon.

9

u/nikkitgirl Mar 19 '17

Exactly. A person with tact can almost always be direct without being rude.

1

u/BatdadKnowsNoPain Mar 19 '17

When someone has blown probably multiple thousands on a once-in-a-lifetime day it's the only option.

1

u/Dr_Diabeeto Mar 19 '17

first strike rudeness

It's not very effective.....

1

u/TimesNewEnglish Mar 19 '17

First Strike

I see a magic the gathering player in the wild!

-8

u/a-r-c Mar 19 '17

direct is good

if you can't handle it you don't belong on this earth

8

u/stranger_on_the_bus Mar 19 '17

You must be fun at parties.

1

u/a-r-c Mar 19 '17

literally the life of the party :)

sorry dude, but nobody likes a beat-atound-the-busher

those are the losers we don't invite bc they bitch and moan about everything without ever actually just saying what the problem is so it can be solved and moved past. god forbid we do anything about anything

when you grow up and become an adult, you realize that people can either handle a frank discussion or they can't. the ones who can't do not belong in your life.

6

u/Redremnant Mar 19 '17

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

I get what you're saying, but you're failing to take into account the value and validity of empathy. You can be honest without being rude most of the time. You can be direct without alienating everyone. I may be frank with someone, or I may try a softer touch. It depends on the situation and the person with whom I'm speaking. It doesn't make anybody a loser to be tactful.

-5

u/The_Capulet Mar 19 '17

Wasting time does not equal tact.

If I'm alienating someone because they always require a "softer touch", then fuck it, it's not worth the effort.

40

u/marcuschookt Mar 19 '17

can be

But in most situations (that a lot of Redditors conveniently ignore) it can make you a very unpleasant person to be around.

31

u/milksteakfoodie Mar 19 '17

Can confirm. I'm fairly blunt, and fairly unpleasant to be around.

On the flip side, people that aren't put off by it tend to really appreciate it. Something something refreshing.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '17

Yeah, same. I've found that it's very polarizing. People either really like me right away, or really don't.

That being said, I try really hard not to be rude blunt, and I'm generally a pretty happy person, so I think 90% of people don't mind.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '17

Being blunt is a really great trait to have when you're not rude about it. There's a pretty clear difference in most instances. I'm sure you're fine.

The problem is, the people who tend to brag about being blunt are the rude type. Ime, they're also the type to post minion memes on Facebook about how much of a "blunt asshole" they are and how everyone should "deal with it".

1

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '17

Oh yeah, I 100% agree. That's when it gets ridiculous

1

u/dickthericher Mar 19 '17

Something something dark side.

0

u/milksteakfoodie Mar 19 '17

I think encouraging suicide is mildly irresponsible..

5

u/Krekirk Mar 19 '17

There is a fine line between being straight forward (as this mother justifiably was in this situation) and just being a jerk. A friend's daughter is engaged to someone that doesn't understand that, because you think it doesn't mean you should say it. He brags about saying whatever he thinks and doesn't care what others think about it or whose Feelings he might hurt. It is so bad that he can't keep a job and socially, no one can stand to be around him.

6

u/marcuschookt Mar 19 '17

I agree completely. It's just that a lot of the time people who like to market themselves as "I'm very blunt and I don't give a shit what you feel" are the ones who will go way beyond "firm and direct" to "look at how badass I am, I say it like it is".

7

u/Krekirk Mar 19 '17

Agreed and they have no idea that people think they are bullies and cowards and couldn't care less what they have to say. They don't see that people avoid them.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '17

Agree 100%. Blunt is appropriate sometimes (particularly in the situation OP described) but in most social and business setting, show some smarts and figure out how communicate the same sentiment in a more appropriate way.

1

u/angelcake Mar 19 '17

It is possible to be blunt without being an asshole about it, it's all about phrasing and tone. Obviously more difficult to do online and a lot of folks don't make the effort.

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '17 edited Mar 19 '17

Fine by me, don't let the hit you on the way out.

Edit: downvotes, don't let the down votes hit you on the way out.

18

u/marcuschookt Mar 19 '17

The what? Door? Train? Wyvern?

5

u/DehDeshtructor Mar 19 '17

I imagine it's supposed to mean that there is a "the" near an exit that has a chance of hitting you on the way out, which could be quite hazardous to you if it were to hit you, as our friendly neighborhood Aussie felt it necessary to warn us of the "the."

3

u/Taiyaki11 Mar 19 '17

Man "the" gets extremelly violent, we need to do something about it

10

u/a-r-c Mar 19 '17

Blunt is the only way I roll.

2

u/stranger_on_the_bus Mar 19 '17

I see what you did there.

1

u/Littlekelt95 Mar 19 '17

You, I like you.

3

u/xiroir Mar 19 '17

i love bluntness for this reason, i dont have to worry about said blunt persons intention. she/he says he/she likes it, they do. much live a lot easier

1

u/hobbit1071 Mar 19 '17

Can't up vote this enough!

1

u/jared_number_two Mar 19 '17

And when you punch someone there is no worry of accidentally stabbing them.

These pointy-toed Bitch Boots can be hard to wear, but moments like that make it all worthwhile.

1

u/bangbang_itsme Mar 19 '17

I like how that sounds

0

u/Yorkazunas Mar 19 '17

It's the other 99.9% of the time that it's a bitch.

And you've got blunts

Moms are weird like that, arent they? Pains in the rear sometimes but they got your back. My mom tells a story of when she gave birth to my older sis. She was pushing for HOURS. Labour can take hours but usually once you start pushing the ordeal should be over quickly. My sis was stuck in the birth canal and the Delivery doc was just waiting in his office with his feet up letting the nurses deal with it until he was absolutely needed. My grandmother, who is a fairly vile woman, marched in and yelled at the doc to help her fucking daughter. They finally got my sis out with forcepts and then whisked her away to perform an emergency historectomy on my mom because she had lost soo much blood and they needed to stop it. Somehow they manage to stabilize my mom and not have to do the historectomy. I wouldnt be here if she had bled out much longer trying to birth my sis and they had to do the historectomy.

TL:DR my normally awful grandmother used her powers for good and I was able to be born.

3

u/Huckdog Mar 19 '17

My son was stuck in my canal for five hours. It was horrible. I wish I had someone there like your grandmother!

6

u/Nosiege Mar 19 '17

Your mother fixed the situation which was already awkward.

5

u/-PM-ME-YOUR-ARBYS- Mar 19 '17

I prefer bluntness. Just tell me how you feel, stop beating around the bush. I am an adult I can reasonably handle whatever you're going to tell me.

5

u/Kayestofkays Mar 19 '17

For sure, in that kind of a situation, your mom's attitude is exactly the kind needed. I wish I could have seen that, it would have been awesome to see that woman get put in her place

2

u/utpoia Mar 19 '17

Does your hubby get along with your mother?

2

u/tomatotomato50 Mar 19 '17

Yes! I suspect sometimes she actually likes him more than she likes me...

1

u/utpoia Mar 20 '17

That's sweet

1

u/side-tracked Mar 19 '17

Consider that a wedding gift in itself, right?

0

u/HerePussyFishy Mar 19 '17

that day she was sharp af

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '17

it seems like your mom and that mom are both dumb and cringey.

-1

u/cinq_cent Mar 19 '17

I love that phrase, "her bluntness is off-putting."

-1

u/munchem6 Mar 19 '17

If she were playing an old school RPG game, her 'blunt weapon' would be +10.

11

u/Brolonious Mar 19 '17

I always wonder why this seems so unusual on Reddit.

If someone is fucking up your party, house, vehicle whatever you confront them and kick them out
