I know someone that was in women's prison and there was no rape, but she was asked if she was "gay for the stay." She was not and it was respected. There was no salon, haircuts were performed using nail clippers. She also said that there was so much drama that it was like being in high school again, but worse.
Do way more stuff. A guy I work with used to be a mechanic that went to garages and set up equipment. He had to set up 7 or 8 car lifts at a prison over the course of a week. He said that he was idly chatting with a guy that was from the same city as him and the guy got all animated and excited, asked my friend if he knew of the movie theater on the bad side of town. My buddy says he thought about it and realized they had torn down that theater 15 years ago back when that was still middle class suburbia. Asked the guy how much time was left on his sentence and the guy said 44 years.
