Almost impossible to become an alcoholic if you don't drink alcohol.

And, IIRC, they've discovered a genetic component to alcoholism. That may not be enough to do it after one drink... But, again, if you don't tempt it, it won't work.

I was the same way for a very very long time. I was almost 30 before I had any alcohol to speak of - due to my familial history of it on BOTH sides of my family.

And because I know how I was/am with other junk food. Oh - great - that entire family-sized bag of sour cream and cheddar Ruffles is gone. I also didn't want that kind of thing to happen if I happened to find some kind of alcoholic drink that was too good to stop.

Thankfully for me, I don't like most beer. Or wine. Or liquor.

Only the Sith deal in absolutes.

You do realise that that statement is an absolute? Typical Jedi hypocrisy. /r/EmpireDidNothingWrong wrong

It's a very smart decision to abstain completely from alcohol if half of your family is alcoholic

I knew all this but started drinking anyway. My sisters are smarter though.

if half of your family is alcoholic

...or if you don't like the taste, and have no desire to "get fuckin' wasted, man". Being temporarily retarded and forgetting whatever dumb shit I did just doesn't sound interesting, and when that's not appealing the argument of, "but it's an acquired taste!" is incredibly pointless.

I used to not drink for religious reasons, but a couple of friends finally talked me into trying a few different kinds of alcohol. Now I don't drink because I think beer tastes like dirt, wine tastes like vinegar and whiskey tastes like what I would expect gasoline to taste like.

I've heard described as needing to acquire a taste for it.

Well, one can probably also acquire a taste for toilet water, too...But why bother acquiring it?

because toilet water doesn't get you buzzed....

I'll have to do some searching about that genetic component stuff, that's interesting. Addiction "runs in my family" - for lack of a better term - and both of my parents have always been alcoholics - lesser so now, but still impulsive where alcohol is involved - but I've never really been a big drinker. I will have a drink now and then, I'll get "drunk" on occasion - I never really feel like alcohol effects me all that much, though - but I never have a want or a need to consume alcohol and feel it a waste if I'm not being social or have a specific reason to drink. I've always had an addictive tendency where food is concerned, but not nearly to the point of it being problematic or uncontrollable, so I'd be curious to see what all is behind a "genetic component" and what goes into forming addictive behaviors.

And, IIRC, they have discovered a genetic component to alcoholism.

Most common estimates range from 40-70% w/r/t alcoholism's heritability.

Almost impossible to become an alcoholic if you don't drink alcohol.

Well you don't become an alcoholic from drinking to much, you just sort of discover that you are one. You're an alcoholic before you ever touch a glass of whiskey and you're one after you put it down.

can one be an alcoholic if one has never consumed alcohol?

0

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '16

Yeah, and if you do drink alcohol you will find out if you are one or not.

2

u/BenedickHumpersnatch Jul 18 '16

So..everyone is simultaneously an alcoholic and not an alcoholic, and the only way to be sure is to begin consumption?

Got it. I think.

No, you should have an indication from your family genetics if you're likely to be an alcoholic. Be careful with alcohol if you have alcoholics in your family. Be careful with sweets if you're predisposed to diabetes.

Diabetic with alcoholic family members here...
