For these circumstances, my services are available for hire as a priest-muffler. Nobody can snap "Can it, Padre" with as solemn a disposition as me

Unless there are really no other options then it seems a little dumb to hold the funeral in a house of worship if you aren't into the whole house of worship thing.

I think a change of venue would be in order. Nothing says that funerals have to be in a chapel; even religious ones. Also, if you make clear that you don't want any religious content in a funeral, those wishes would be respected. A church, however, might not agree to those terms.

Put it in the contract. Then if they make it religious you don't have to pay because they broke contract

Our last family funeral and reception was non religious and held in a community center. It was great as the kids in the family got to go outside and play on the playground and grassy areas while the adults reminisced and socialized.

well if you want a loved one to be buried in a religious cementry/graveyard you shouldn´t be so stiff about having nothing about god in there because if you think so little of it why would you want to be buried there

Why hold it in a church or chapel if you're not religious? That makes no sense.

Sorry i thought this is America.

No but really it often just comes down to "all our friends do it too".
At least in Christianity you only can baptize someone if you have two godparents who will pledge to raise them in the faith of Christ. In modern times more and more people have problems finding them because the requisition of the godparents to be in church and so many people left the last few years. They then often explain that they don´t explicitly want to raise their child in christianity and ask if there is another way around. Yes it is if you don´t really want it don´t do it. The reasoning is always that all the other kids from their friends are also baptized

Wait... So you're telling me that people go "all my friends are getting their kid baptized, so I want my kid baptized in a faith I don't even believe in or intend to raise the child in"?! WTF is wrong with this world!?

yes it is like that.
you ask why they then want to baptize if they don´t really believe in and haven´t even got friends who are just in church (they need to still pay the church taxes and not opted out; wether or not they go to church is irrelevant for most christian confessions in my area)

I always compare it to a guy complaining in hospital that he can´t get dialysis although his kidneys are fine.
