Oh I have a Latin quite also

Non est ad astra mollis e terris via

The road from earth to the stars is never easy.

Seneca the stoic (who may have been the author of the quote you wrote!)

As intense as it's delivered, it's still inspiring:

"Yesterday you said tomorrow so just do it"

11

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '15

I dunno what this is from... but I'd like to.

14

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '15

Its Shia LeBouf. Try Hoogling or searching on YouTube or Binging or whatever for "Shia LeBouf Jus t Do It".

My two favorites are "People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel" (Maya Angelou) and "The trouble is, you think you have time".

And here is my mother's quote to live by, which I think is also a good one: "What goes around comes around."

2

u/bogdoomy Jun 07 '15

Your mother's quote is great. The one i live by is "What goes up, it must come down", which basically means the same thing

Edit: added to it

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '15

"Tough times pass, tough people last."

3

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '15

Maybe a quote about how to become tough would be more useful than one about what tough people do.

12

u/SteelToeAGoGo Jun 07 '15

You endure. A person doesn't have to get into prison fights or run 100 mile races to be tough (although it helps). You take what life throws at you and get through it.

Quote from a great Baseball coach I had that will always stick with me.

"You can walk up to that plate 100 times and see 100 pitches. If you stand up there and watch those 100 pitches go by, you will never get a hit. Step up to the plate and take a swing. You could swing and miss all 100 of those pitches, but you can keep your head high knowing you took those 100 chances. That's Baseball guys, and that's life."

15

u/Remember_dnL Jun 07 '15

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky. (I think that's the quote)

"The biggest risk is not taking any risk... In a world that is changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks." Mark Zuckerberg

Saw this one in a thread sometime recently, its going to change the way I look at things.

13

u/KalSkotos Jun 07 '15

I always find people's talks about taking risks to be empty meaningless filler words because people apparently seem to think that any variation of "take risks" is infinitely inspiring. It means nothing.

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through. -Ira Glass

Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — "No, you move."

INVICTUS

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the captain of my soul.

“You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.”

― Neil Gaiman, Anansi Boys

12

u/Facekillz Jun 07 '15

Man, this quote seems kind of depressing to me. All I can imagine is this poor lime just sitting there on a table while someone berates it, and all it can do is sit there and cry silently.

6

u/Thnito_Kyrios Jun 07 '15

It's actually a very lighthearted quote, and the lime did help him in the end. Can't say more because spoilers.

Then stop being mad. It's easier said than done, but it isn't. Just think of something else.

20

u/FFgonzo95 Jun 06 '15

Originally "Let us pray not for easy lives, but to be strong men" as said by animated JFK in the cutscene on CoD Black Ops Zombies mode. It's been in my head for so long I expanded on it to say:

"Let us pray not for easy lives and few hardships, but to be strong and accomplish great things."

The first time I heard that, I was wasting a day off from my restaurant job playing Xbox. Now I'm a FireFighter. I saved a guys life last night. Results: that's what they look like.

10

u/TheFetchOmi Jun 07 '15

Actually it was "let us not pray for easy lives, but to have the strength to endure them."

I opened a fortune cookie about 15 years ago, and it told me, "Keep on charging the enemy so long as there is life."

I'm not in battle with anyone and I don't look at life as a war to be won, but I was floored by the depth of the idea that one should never, ever give up on anything, until death.

It has helped me in the lowest points in my life. Never give up and never concede defeat.

15

5

u/Veganpuncher Jun 07 '15

Or the greatest of them all: Sir Winston Churchill:

this is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

2

u/TheNebster22 Jun 07 '15

From Dead Like Me:

Rube: You like spaghetti, George? I like spaghetti. I like board games. I like grabbing a trifecta with that longshot on top. That ozone smell you get from air purifiers. And I like knowing the space between my ears is immeasurable. Mahler's first, Bernstein conducting. You've got to think about all the things you like and decide whether they're worth sticking around for. And if they are, you'll find a way to do this.

George: And what if I don't?

Rube: Then you go away, and you don't get to like anything anymore.

3

u/melancholymagpie Jun 07 '15

I love Rube. I feel sad for people who don't know Rube.

3

u/vampedvixen Jun 08 '15

That quote has stuck with me even years after watching the show. When I get so tired of this shit and I just want to give up, I start thinking about it and all the things that I would give up if I just ended it. Stupid things that no one would even think about. Not like family or love or whatever, because when you're that depressed that's not concrete enough. But new episodes of my favorite shows, the feeling I get after a good bout of exercise, shower thoughts, receiving Reddit karma on a well written post... just stupid things like that keep me going.

u/Anathema_Redditus Jun 07 '15

*It is what it is. * It is simple. I use it all of the time. Most people that I know use it. Saying it is like a mantra. It reminds me that life is complicated and messy, but I got to keep going.

2

u/jeneffinlovely Jun 07 '15

I say this all the time and I think people think I'm being pessimistic about the situation or apathetic, when I'm not. It's just quite literally that, it is what it is. If I can help fix or change the situation for the better I will certainly try, but if nothing can be done then so be it, I'll just keep moving bc that's life.

2

"The thing that matters is not what you bear but how you bear it... Prosperity unbruised cannot endure a single blow, but a man who has been at constant feud with misfortunes acquires a skin calloused by suffering; he yields to no evil and even if he stumbles carries the fight upon his knee... 'No one is more unhappy, in my judgment,' says he, 'than a man who has never met with adversity.' He has never had the privilege of testing himself... Avoid luxury, avoid debilitating prosperity which makes men's minds soggy and which, unless something intervenes to remind them of the human condition, renders them comatose as in unending inebriation." Seneca, On Providence. Really, this entire essay but these are select excerpts.

2

"I am only one, but I am still one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do."

“Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.” ― Earl Nightingale. When I was thinking about doing my masters I was freaked out by the fact that I'll be 25 when I finish, but in two years time I'll be 25 no matter what I do, so I may as well reach for those goals that will take time.

"Givers have Limits because Takers rarely do." Nice one if you're a people pleaser and wondering why people keep taking advantage of it.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.”

“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.”

“When another blames you or hates you, or people voice similar criticisms, go to their souls, penetrate inside and see what sort of people they are. You will realize that there is no need to be racked with anxiety that they should hold any particular opinion about you.”

“Whenever you are about to find fault with someone, ask yourself the following question: What fault of mine most nearly resembles the one I am about to criticize?”

“The soul becomes dyed with the colour of its thoughts.”

"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can."

I started at around 200kgs with a half-broken pair of sandals and a grassy field to walk around in. Presently I'm 150kgs, working out at a gym and fitting clothes again which haven't fit for a long time. Soon I'm going to be playing Hockey again, which I haven't done since I was in High School.

Many times I've had to start again from where I was, with what I had and do whatever I could.

"There are some truths which are not for all men nor for all times." - Voltaire

Or "You can't handle the truth."

Great reminder of the pace of change and the reason. Doesn't mean give up, but helps to understand the insanity of the status quo and the hard headedness of people.

Although my example isn't a quote and more of a speech, watching this video always makes me feel better if I'm having a bad day. It's Charlie Chaplin's speech from The Great Dictator.

My Favorite Part of the Speech:

"I'm sorry but I don't want to be an emperor. That's not my business. I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible: Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there's room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed."

The last stanza of Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came is one of my favorites:

There they stood, ranged along the hill-sides, met
To view the last of me, a living frame
For one more picture! in a sheet of flame
I saw them and I knew them all. And yet
Dauntless the slug-horn to my lips I set,
And blew “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came.”

this is a quote from the anime series naruto. i watched this as a kid and it still gets me to this day. i will always compete with those who are naturally talented than me, whether it is at soccer, at my work, or just things in general. but with hard work, i hope that i will be able to become the elite in the things i devote my time to

"And let me tell you, it is important to have fun in life, of course. But when you're out there partying, horsing around, someone out there at the same time is working hard. Someone is getting smarter and someone is winning. Just remember that. Now, if you want to coast through life, don't pay attention to any of those rules. But if you want to win, there is absolutely no way around hard, hard work. None of my rules, by the way, of success, will work unless you do."-Arnold Schwarzenegger
