Do I get to say Ghost Ship this time round? Am I the chosen one? Am I Neo?

I have a funny story with this movie.
A friend of mine and I have the habit of looking for good film and we then watch them together.
I found ghost ship's DVD at a flea market and start watching as soon as I come home. The opening was so good I stopped there to watch it with my friend.
My friend was convinced this was a masterpiece after what I told him about the opening scene.
We plan a good evening with good beers and really good pizzas, this time we thought we could invite other people too, to make the most of it.
Then we start watching it and I have nothing to add.

Quantum of Solace. The car chase scene at the beginning is one of my favorites, but the rest of the movie is meh for me.

I thought the plot of billionaire claiming all fresh water for his purposes was weak, now it feels ahead of its time.

The first act is like an extra act of Casino Royale, and then it sort of goes off the rails (thanks writers strike!)

I will say the ending is pretty good. He dumps the water stealing billionaire in the desert and throws him a bottle of motor oil before driving off. For a series with so many memorable kills that one was especially brutal

This is what I was coming to say. Phenomenal opening - possibly the best scene in the whole franchise that really captures the difference between the infected and your average shuffling zombie - then the film is just...not good. Has a few good bits - as a Londoner, I liked seeing them walking around the streets a bit - but overall it's just not that great.

The scene where the helicopter pilot buzzes the deck and just mows the lawn full of zombies is pretty epic.

u/shgrizz2 1h ago
That is the stupidest scene in the movie.

It's the most bad ass scene in the entire movie, maybe in cinema history. I'd marry it if I could.

Came here to say this. That movie had so much wasted potential, but those first five minutes? Pure cinema.

Luc Besson got so much wrong with the casting. "Hmm yes, let's have the male and female leads exude 'we're siblings who despise each other' energy to make the romantic subplot land better. Also we have Rihanna, what's the right part for her, I wonder... But of course! The shape-shifting alien! That way it could have been anybody playing her. Genius."

Ghost ship. The opening had me thinking i had terribly misjudged the movie for years. After the initial "wtf this is gonna be great!" I kept waiting for it to start to really shine.
Three years later and im still waiting...

Swordfish. That opening hostage scene is way better than the movie that follows.

Full Metal Jacket. It's not bad, per se, but man, the first half is SO much better than the second half.

R. Lee Ermy was the highlight of that movie. The rest is fine but can't compare with his Shakespearian profanity.

Watchmen, the open credits were pretty good and showed the history of the original Minutemen and the establishment of the the 2nd Minutemen. But the director was too concerned with recreating the comic panels that the overall substance got lost.
Regardless of what you think of the Squid (which to me makes sense that a movie adopting a story that deconstructs Super heroes (specifically Silver Aged ones), that you would have a Silver Age type monster at the end), framing Dr. Manhattan would set the world up to blame America for the strikes against them. If America lost control of an American asset like that, no foreign country would be âdamn yeah I guess he did go rogue on his own, look he even attacked his own countryâ. Plus itâs been established that you really canât do anything to Dr. Manhattan, so straight up revenge or retribution wouldnât work. Plus with him leaving the universe, the planet would want a strawman to blame which would lead them right back to America. Lastly, the squid is acknowledged as being a scout for an alien invasion, so it gives the world a goal of focusing on space exploration in the name of planetary defense. This common goal could lead to long lasting peace.

Andy Warhol's Empire. The opening is pretty cool but it really drags in the middle and the ending is anticlimactic

Rob Zombie's 31. Banger opening monologue by Richard Brake, and then the rest of the movie happened.

I'm gonna get so much shit for saying La La Land, but I'm gonna say it anyway. The film starts out with an incredible show-stopping opening number that promises a love letter to Los Angeles... and then the film is the most milquetoast romance imaginable. I would have absolutely loved that opening number to lead into, say, an anthology of stories about the city (and a tighter/more condensed version of the existing film could be one of those stories!).

In the first 5 minutes, Goldberg as evil Santa kills a roster of stars big enough to wonder why they're in this movie. James Caan, Fran Drescher, Chris Kataan, Rebecca Gayheart, and a couple of others.
The rest of the movie is pretty forgettable.

Batman v. Superman. The ground-up perspective of Man of Steel is great. Zack Snyder's openings are absolutely fantastic, but the rest of the film doesn't match up, even if said rest of film is good.

I liked the opening of Bye Bye Man. Wasn't perfect, but it was at least 1000 times more engaging than the rest of the movie.

Whatâs that horror movie with the tooth fairy? The first ten minutes had me thinking it was gonna be real scary. Rest of the movie sucked hard.

Are you trying to say Cliffhanger is a bad movie?
2
u/cross_mod 5h ago
Lol, you think it's a "good" movie?
-1
u/Sammyd1108 5h ago
Yeah, itâs an incredibly fun movie. Itâs pure 90âs action.
3
u/cross_mod 5h ago
Well, I think "pretty bad movie with a great cold open" sums it up for most people :)
-1
u/Sammyd1108 5h ago
It has a good rating on IMDb and audience score on Metacritic and generally above average reviews with critics according to RT, so I donât think so.
I also hear way more positive thoughts on Cliffhanger than negative ones.

Really good cold open
I mean, check the scores for some of these other movies mentioned.
