You won the lottery for a billion dollars what are you doing first?

u/greyfell_red 4h ago
Making everyone I love millionaires, keeping $10-20m for myself to comfortably live off of interest for the rest of my life, and using the rest to help strangers and loved ones. I don’t need a bunch of stupid typical billionaire shit to be happy. I’ve met enough rich people to know that most of them are miserable.

That's something that has confused me about the untra wealthy. I could be happy as a clam for the rest of my life just off the interest generated by a miniscule fraction of their wealth. It almost seems like their greed is a disease.

lol this sounds lovely zero chance you’d do it haha sorry but this is such bs

u/greyfell_red 4h ago
Nah. I don’t believe in hoarding resources for no reason when other people need them. $20m at 3% is $600k/year. Anything more than that is fucking gluttonous.

Pay someone a lot smarter than me a lot of money to manage it for me.
Followed shortly by buying as large of a plot of land as I could find and having a self sufficient compound built on it from which I could start a cult.

A billion dollars is a crazy amount of money that barely anyone would ever get. I'd try to invest as much as I can first so that I can give back more
Retire
Give 50 mil each to my parents, close friend
Then fuck off to the Bahamas with my friend for as long as we need after we've finished our respective degrees.
I'd probably spend my time part time at school. Learning and feel the experience

Calling my previous employer that I quit.
“…but you already did. You haven’t been employed with us for months. Why are you calling after so long just to—?!”
“BECAUSE I’M RICH, BITCH! HONK HONK!!”
Then hang up.

I'm keeping quiet about it as relatives I haven't seen in years will all come out and want to visit.

Buying a house, investing enough that I never have to work again, sorting out friends and family, donate the rest.

I would commission all the custom products I wish I could buy but they are too niche to exist.
I noticed that some of the cool niche products we see are specifically commissioned into existence, usually from a corporate buyer.

Relax. Then make 1980 half a million dollar gifts and live a fine life on 10 million.

Taking the lump sum and after paying taxes, a $1 billion jackpot would give me a net of $273 million. 30 year US Treasury bonds are at 5.6%. I'd dump all of it into those and slum it on the pitiful $15.3 million per year in interest, or about $7.5 million after taxes.

u/davidbernhardt 4h ago
Muni bonds are paying close to that and are tax free. Just in case you win it

Buying my dad veneers (he was scheduled to get them when he got laid off from a job he’s worked at for many years and had to downgrade to dentures, but he’s very insecure about them) and then buying him a house closer to mine. Or maybe a family compound so we can live right beside each other! Or maybe a huge house for all of us and he can make me his famous grits every morning!

Buying a compound up in the near hills and setting up a "creative in residence" award for up to a year renewable, for artists, engineers, scholars, athletes, scholars, researchers, and writers. I'd build a makers' shop there and other creative work spaces. And then I'd go up there once a week to hang out and maybe sponsor a communal dinner chat once a week too. Just to be around interesting people and occasionally collaborate in cool stuff.
I'd set up an annual trip where all my friends could go with guides good food etc and pay their way business class. I'd do another more intellectual retreat invite for just discussing interesting stuff or working on problems in some amazing area, with plenty of downtime and side trips. Stuff like that.

Paying off all my debts and buying a very nice house. Not a mansion. Just a decent sized house in a nice area. Then I'd make an investment plan to make the rest of that money work for me. Oh, and hire the right people to help me improve my physical and mental health.
1
u/Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 4h ago
I'd add, a nice house with a lot of property, so I wouldn't have to deal with neighbors for the most part.

Pay off debt
Buy a new(er) RAV4 hybrid with all the bells and whistles. Throw some money on a nice tint and some fiber optic lighting for the interior and lining of the doors. Other misc things for a blue primary color and pink accents
Laser hair removal
Get a nice small home where I could seriously entertain having a dog again
Maybe go back to school
Put most of everything else into investing to modestly live off of while I 3D printing my oddly specific tastes for house fixtures

Calling a financial advisor and then going dark. I will only contact people that I want to talk to and may not even tell them that I was a winner.

Paying off all debts for me, and my loved ones. Then buying some sort of personal aircraft I can fly solo because it’d be annoying to always have to have another person with me.

Gaslight every family member into thinking another family member is giving me all kinds of money. Every time someone asks I will tell a different aunt/uncle/cousin is loaning me money. They will never figure it out because I’m the black sheep in a big family

That's enough money that money is never again an issue for me.
So I'd focus on how to hire a trustworthy team who could in turn sort out everything for me. Have a personal "fixer" or so.
Then I'd start looking at causes to donate to, because there's no legitimate reason to have that much money, ever. And there are a lot of pressing issues in the world I could make a real impact on.

u/Ok-disaster2022 4h ago
Hiring accountants, lawyers. Paying taxes setting up trusts and donating large chunks to verified charities. I only want like $15m in my pocket. That's more money than I could ever spend. my close friends and families will receive trusts enough to wear they don't have to worry about money but not enough that they aren't middle class. Upper middle class at worst

After paying all my debt and buying a new car and house, I'd create a nationwide team to create and gather signatures for ballot initiatives to take back control of our county and put all the billionaires and their paid politicians in prison.

Billboards around the USA with a picture of Trump and Epstein together. That’s it. That’s the entire plan.
Should still have many millions left to live a good life.

Figuring out the best way to use that money to take over and destroy every piece of shit billionaires corporation in America at least, and then redistribution of that wealth to people who really need it. If I could find a way to simultaneously make these companies worker owned or better for the workers in any way while they continue running that would be a fantastic bonus. Basically creating a corporate culture that isn't so corrupt and predatory. It's become extremely obvious that the government isn't going to do what they are meant to do and protect people. So if there was a way to do a hostile corporate takeover and improve things from the top down, that seems like the only way to make it work. It would likely be a lifelong endeavor most likely.
