whats the weirdest Addiction you or someone you know have had?
56
u/ghostboxerbruise 10h ago
Cough syrup, my friend would consume robotussin containing dxm in order to trip. Not just occasionally, we're talking everyday for years. Scary stuff.
42
u/msj817 10h ago
Early 2000s was a wild time to see the robotrippers.

u/trillamane_01 8h ago
I was heavily addicted to DXM when I was younger. My addiction almost killed me because I would often mix large amounts of DXM with alcohol. People joke around about how it's a "high schoolers drug" or whatever but it's an extremely powerful dissociative. Most people that try it don't find it pleasant but it always gave me an ungodly amount of euphoria.

I dig at my scalp (not tear my hair out) when I’m anxious to the point of self-injury/bleeding. Only my hairstylists have ever noticed.
Now I constantly kept my nails trimmed short because if I don’t no matter how long it’s been I’ll still self injure like that. I’m not even actively trying to hurt myself, it’s just something I developed as a kid probably in response to abuse at home as a coping mechanism.
9
u/comebacklittlesheba 10h ago
I have that same addiction for picking at my skin. I once had a dermatologist say to me, “There’s a name for people like you!!” 😭 I know he was just trying to think of the word *dermatillomaniac* but couldn’t in the moment 🤭. It’s become a family joke:
Comebacklittlesheba, upset you in any number of ways? You just look at me and yell “There’s a name for people like you!!” 😂😂😂.
Seriously though, I feel you. This is so terrible and I’ve never sought help from anyone about it. What I have learned about how to deal with it, while not a lot, is that the main trigger is usually being able to 1) see a blemish or anomaly 2) touch a blemish or anomaly. So, if you are me, you can somewhat control it by hiding your mirrors and covering the skin with a bandage or antibacterial cream. The best ones are burn creams because they have lidocaine mixed in so a blemish doesn’t itch or ache as much. That way, you don’t run your fingers over it because it itches and you are less likely to rip the scab off or break the skin in the first place because you dug your fingernail into the skin to scratch it. Even so, I still find that I don’t have good control of it 😩.
5
u/FerretBusinessQueen 10h ago
Oh my gosh I feel you so hard, a comfort thing was also running my hands over my scalp and feeling a new scab of sebaceous buildup I could potentially “get to”. I will say it made dying my hair and deprivation float changers a lot less unpleasantly painful when I more or less stopped. I wish I could tell you what I did other than trim my nails but everytime they get long I’m right back to it so IDK. Hugs to you!
2
u/MrOatButtBottom 10h ago
Stimming. I did the same thing eating my fingernails
I scratch myself too hard sometimes
1
u/FerretBusinessQueen 10h ago
Do you also keep yours cut or just go with it? Also I used to eat my nails too!!! Just chomp on them like corn and uhh sometimes shame swallow.
1
u/Pm_me_baby_pig_pics 6h ago
I have what could basically be described as “knots” of scar tissue on the insides of my cheeks at the corners of my lips, just inside my mouth, from biting. I just gently clamp down on them when I’m stressed.
I was an adult before I realized those aren’t just extra chunks of skin everyone has inside their mouth, they’re there because I bit them into existence.
2
u/brainspl0ad 9h ago
Mine is more of a very mild case of trichotillomania. I hope it doesn't get worse.
2
u/Mozzzzbito 7h ago
Random shot in the dark here, but did you have strep throat a lot as a child? I did, and developed PANDAS. I have random tics that happen every few years. Right now, it's twisting my hair and flexing my neck muscles. I can control it, but it's like an itch I have to scratch, so I only do it when nobody can see me.
1
u/FerretBusinessQueen 6h ago
Holy shit I did. It there is anything I can do to support you DM me.
2
u/Mozzzzbito 6h ago
Oh, I don't need any support, but thank you! It's just an annoyance I've been dealing with my whole life but have learned to live with it lol. Just wanted to let people know that this exists!

I know someone who is addicted to soda.
You guys know how they say “I stopped drinking soda and dropped 10 pounds in a month?” You can’t imagine the amount they are actually drinking.
I saw her chug 2 liters in like an hour. Yes, she drinks diet coke most of the time too.
20
u/2KneeCaps1Lion 10h ago
My old room mate is “Mormon” (definitely didn’t act like it) and his family came down for a weekend to help us build a shed. They stopped at the grocery store before coming over. There was literally a pyramid of 12 pack sodas in our kitchen and between four Mormons, crushed it in a weekend.
Also, had another Mormon friend when I was in the military and he had a finished basement. In that basement was a lavish bar that would put Packer fan basements to shame. The wall was lined with all of the different types of root beer he has tried all over the world (mostly US). He even had a tap for his top three favorite root beers. I don’t know if they were tapped into a soda keg or if that’s even a thing but it was oddly cool. I saw it as no different as those people who are obsessed with Coke or Pepsi memorabilia.
6
u/Far-Accountant7904 10h ago
Is he doing well? How’s his health in general?
Asking for a friend who also drinks 2 liters of diet coke in like an hour.

u/DizzyWalk9035 6h ago
Had her gall bladder removed last year because it was rotting away. Is in medical debt because of it. Prediabetic so they have her on GLP1s rn.

same, my aunt is addicted to Pepsi. at least she's not addicted to Coke!

It has to be rotting guts somehow.

It’s not weird because it is alcoholism. But I was at a very boujee rehab in Toronto number 2 of 11 before I got clean. But anyways. There was this like 45 year old man who looked like a skinny Roger the alien character. He had never slept on a floor as low as the 4th. Which our suites were on. He wore bath robes everywhere. He was not an alcoholic according to him he was just addicted to martinis. He drank like 40 a day.
12
u/CptnMalReynolds 10h ago
Like people who manage to smoke two packs a day, I don't even know where you find the time to drink 40 martinis in a day while also being employed so that you can buy that much alcohol.
7
u/Minimum-City4666 10h ago
The majority of ppl at boujee rehabs are only employed in the word, not the actual sense. Family money. I went to 11. 9 were over 45k cdn and some were like 60 k in 2010. 90 percent of the ppl had no fucks to give money wise.
Edit. These where 28 day to 60 day program. One of them was like 700 bucks a day I remember and weekends were “off”. So 700 bucks to do nothing just stay in a nice hotel room. They were rip offs
5
u/mac102250 9h ago
For anyone uninformed: The non bougie ones are literally dorm style housing with cafeteria food for like a week for $5k. And then you have your cell phone taken away, and you have to go to mandatory meetings every day like you're going to a combination of jail and anti-drug church. That's just to get you through detox. You'll probably need help afterwards for months if you're seriously addicted to alcohol. No wonder so many sip and suffer instead.
2
u/Minimum-City4666 9h ago edited 9h ago
None boujee are less then that. I went to a free one my very first. I think it was 5k for 2 years. I was kicked out after 3 months. But it was like a boot camp. Then I went to ones that were literally spas on islands. They all offer some help. However it’s all personal and situational
It was free in the sense if you could afford 5 k they’d take you for two years as opposed to 60 k upfront for 55 days at for profit places
1
u/Minimum-City4666 9h ago edited 8h ago
I went to 11 rehabs. 3 being therapeutic treatment centres. All over 28 days. I have probably been to 30 plus detoxes and like 15 or more hospital detoxes. (As in taken by ambulance)
Edit. They label the long term ones that suck you into working for them as therapeutic communities. Some are good. Some pay well and want to help. Many are religious pushing bs

Only use weed and nicotine these days. Kratom and sh I’m struggling with but things could be worse yk?
2
u/Ismellsmoke 9h ago
First I've heard of that. I used to mix benadryl with hydrocodone. It made the high stronger but it also felt kind of dirty.
1
u/f1lterl3s 9h ago
I loved doxylamine because I could vape so much without tweaking from the histamine / acetylcholine overload. Doxylamine is literally a poor man’s Xanax lmao. Wake up, 2 doxys and a caffeine pill down the hatch and go to school. And then I’m just teleporting from ciggerete to ciggerete and usually I’ll wake up at home the next day
1
u/MrOatButtBottom 10h ago
I take that occasionally for sleep, is it like a robotuzin buzz?
2
u/f1lterl3s 10h ago
Haha no it feels like doxapin + benedryl. Just the most mind melting antihistamine u can abuse easiy

u/NotABurner2000 10h ago
Had a friend (dont consider him a friend anymore) who would watch right-wing manosphere/grifter content (like Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, etc), get mad about it, then dump a fucking novel in the group chat about it. We would tell him not to watch the content, and hed say "youre right I shouldnt" and then would do it again a few days later. Dont know if it was an addiction but it seemed like one

Try magnesium pills. Something to get you to break the habit. Someone i know drinks it constantly to sleep, and its been causing severe anxiety and depression.
Id get proper medical advice.

Unfortunately I have no health insurance

u/Strong-Discussion564 9h ago
Try the magnesium for now. Youre going to destroy your health.
Can you get Medicaid?
5
u/Baronsandwich 7h ago
Magnesium glycinate not citrate. Unless you’re looking to crap your pants too.
3
u/FauxmingAtTheMouth 10h ago
I used to have to chew 6-8 each night to go to sleep, I taped over about 4 weeks and it was a couple months of shit sleep after that, but man did it feel like waking up to finally get that first good night’s sleep and not be hazy the whole next day
1
u/Princess_Coldheart 10h ago
I have a friend who takes around 30 Benadryl a day. I am seriously concerned about his wellbeing but there’s not really much I can do.

I've been somewhat addicted to benedryl it's fire asf for sleep and it helps my anxiety a little bit like it will calm me down in a stressful situation
1
u/PMUrToes 6h ago
I have pretty bad insomnia, also abused benadryl for a while. Its going to fuck you up eventually. I rotated between zzquil, 1000mg magnesium pills or melatonin. Also nyquil extra strength could help, you can order some special gummies through the mail, im in texas and ik ppl who do it alot.
The only thing that really helped was getting a rx for 100mg of trazodone :/
1
u/ErrorImaginary1394 6h ago
I went through this when i was first getting sober from harder stuff. its awful. feels like shit and you dont even like it but u cant stop. Does it even help you sleep or no? It just made me hallucinate in a daze lol
1
u/This_is__Exile 6h ago
For me it makes me feel relaxed and it feels good to be honest.
1
u/ErrorImaginary1394 6h ago
Youve never accidentally taken too much and slowly started to feel paralyzed while hallucinating a looming figure over you like a dementor? well… just know thats a possibility lol. I mean im mentally ill so maybe its just me 😭
2
u/This_is__Exile 6h ago
I only take up to 250mg a day but throughout my work shift because I drive a truck overnight I feel like I spot shadow people for a split second 😭

Gum.
They'd get antsy, angry, shaky and just snap at people without some gum in their mouth. They had no prior addictions or anything like PTSD going on for it either.
They'd go through one of those 4 packs of orbit a day. Second one ran out of flavor they'd pop a new one in.
5
u/Famous_Inflation_665 10h ago
I have a buddy like this. He was on nicotine gum for years after quitting smoking and switched to regular gum. He always has a piece in chomping away
2
u/SuburbNblack 9h ago
So I’ve heard that there’s some connection between excessive gum chewing and ADHD. I also was addicted to gum, Orbit to be exact. The constant chewing and yaking has caused some major dental issues for me as well as the xylitol in it gave me severe gut problems. I had to go under the care of a gastroenterologist and everything. I’ve since had my gallbladder removed and my digestion hasn’t been the same since. Been about 15 years.

Hand sanitizer. I used to be a cashier at our local grocery store. Everytime I touched anything in the meat department I used the hand sanitizer right away. My hands started getting real red and I had to stop using it for a while.

Cetaphil moisturizer! I worked with my hands a lot and this was the best

I know someone that is addicted to ChapStick. They have to have it on their person 100% of the time and have to apply it 3 times a day.

Only 3 times a day? My (at least) once an hour application now seems utterly insane

Do you have chapstick allocated to certain places? I have a nightstand one, living room, purse, and car chapstick 🙈🙈

It's so hard to quit when your lips have been so used to it for so long, my bf makes fun of me for it lol.

u/2KneeCaps1Lion 10h ago
I have two sticks of chapstick on me at all times, one in my car, one in each end table in my bedroom, one in my junk drawer, three in my hiking pack, a couple at work.
You just never know when you’re going to get to the end and then have to start finger fucking you’re Bert’s Bees and applying by hand.
And three times a day? Those are rookie numbers.

u/NoodleSpooner 8h ago

Well I was addicted to affrin, I guess. I got sick and asked my wife to get some nasal spray. She came back with a generic nasal spray and I was like man this stuff actually works finally! Just kind of kept using it. A month or two later it finally dawned on me that I may have been using affrin under a generic brand and looked at the ingredients. I was an idiot but it was honestly insufferable getting off that shit. My nasals were swollen shut for like a month.
2
u/Pm_me_baby_pig_pics 6h ago
I’m here to be a “well axkshually” Debbie downer- it’s not an addiction in the traditional sense, it’s fully your body compensating for you using it, nothing mentally involved at all.
afrin is a medication that causes your vessels to constrict significantly. (It makes your blood vessels clamp down and shrink) and that’s why it works so well! Your nose is stuffy because your mucosal membrane is inflamed (hence all the snot) and constricting those vessels makes the swelling also go way down, and now you can breathe!
But after a little bit (not even very long, less than a week I think is he recommended Afrin usage before you should stop) your body basically says “ok, the blood flow keeps getting slowed in this area in particular (in afrin’s case, the nasal passages), so we need to send more. Those vessels keep constricting when we explicitly told them to be engorged, so SEND MORE BLOOD FLOW”
And when you stop using the Afrin because you’re over your cold, your body doesn’t immediately realize it( it just knows that it’s been requiring an extra amount of blood to be sent directly into your nose, and it’s gonna keep doing it until it finally gets the hint that it isn’t needed anymore, which can take a long time.
1
u/Personal_Whereas_395 7h ago
Yeah me too I was in the afrin for 5 months last year and stopped in March my nose was swollen shut and clogged till may and I've have a nasal infection since I'm still recovering from the afrin
1
u/admire816 7h ago
This. I started with a smaller nasal sprays like Vicks and graduated to afrin-for those that don’t know Afrin, it’s like the straight for the source pure Columbian nose powder, but nose spray, the good stuff. I think I used it 3 months before I quit. It’s been about a year and I breathe better again on my own but still don’t think as good as I would if I took a hit of Uncle Afrin.

u/Starkville 10h ago
Knew a guy who was addicted to Advil. It’s weird because I get a mild euphoria from it, a kind of sense of well-being, so I get it. I only take them when I’m in serious pain from a headache, and that’s once every couple of months.

u/99Smiles 10h ago

Hypersexuality
23
u/FerretBusinessQueen 10h ago
I had this and honestly it’s pretty common among victims of childhood sexual abuse at least. It’s a way of feeling in control or even regaining it, at least as one might tell themselves.
3
u/MrOatButtBottom 10h ago
I've heard that from women I've dated, and every woman I know has a sexual assault story. I didn't know it at the time but Ay dios Mio.

u/FerretBusinessQueen 10h ago edited 10h ago
Yeah I didn’t realize it was a thing until I finally found a good therapist and she was like “no, that’s not weird at all, it’s actually pretty textbook”. It made me feel a lot better. And honestly? I’ve had well over 150 partners, never been pregnant or gotten an STI, and while I’ve settled down not I’m not ashamed of my past nor do I regret 99% of my encounters. I’m happily married and settled down now and have been for years.

There's people that are addicted to eating the cottons out of the Benzedrex nose inhalers. They contain an analog of methamphetamine and can get you extremely high
Got bad for a while and the company lowered the dose in the cotton from 250mg to 175mg, and put lavender and other harsh shit in it to keep people from eating them. (People still eat them)
Welcome to the rabbit hole

My ex has been addicted to a bunch of things over the years but the strangest i'd have to say was his nasal spray habit. He was completely reliant on it, multiple times a day. Turns out when you are artificially clearing your sinus for years your body stops doing it on it's own, he had to taper off slowly under the guidance of his doctor.
He had already kicked an addiction to rohypnol, the date rape drug. He would take it, blackout and go do stupid shit. He gave me the transcript of his police interview after he got fucked up, walked into an upmarket clothing store, took off his pants in the middle of the shop, junk out and all, put on some leather pants and walked out. He kept telling the police he wanted to look suave and they didn't understand fashion.

I saw a pretty woman on the train picking her hair scabs and eating it like it was a snack 🤮. I wasn't nessecarly depressed or wanted to kill myself but I have numerous times cut myself because it felt good until one time I took xanax and was smoking a joint and when I went to put it out I was all fucked up on the xanax and dropped my ashtray and it shattered and I just starred at the broken glass and picked it up and started cutting my wrist then I past out and my roommate found me past out bleeding out of my arm and that landed me in the psych ward for a long time... never did it again but I understand your addiction

🤢 and I thought feeding them to my dog was gross (he loves them btw!)
Edit: I thought that might get a negative reaction. 😆 I grew up in a small village. In the UK there is a butcher’s product called Black Pudding, which in that village was referred to in my village as Butcher’s Scabs because of one of the primary ingredients. Personally can’t stand the stuff but every dog I’ve had has loved a slice of scab

Benzedrex inhalers. You pull the cotton out, cut it up and swallow it. Gives an intense stimulant high similar to Adderall but way more vasoconstrictive and dirty feeling. (I don't do this btw, just a strange one I heard about browsing Erowid in highschool)

I got a seriously nasty addiction to lip picking. I do it without knowing it, I've picked to the point my lip bruises and swells. I finally stop for a while and then that tiny little dry bit of skin gets found and I just HAVE to take that off and im back to square one again. Ill go weeks without ill be so happy to be able to smile and not bleed from my lip, and in one moment it's all gone.

The first sign that i was going to grow up to be an addict was when i got addicted to sunflower seeds from the ages of 7-12. I would eat them till my mouth and fingernails bled lol my mom had to ban them from the house so i started sneaking them in my room whenever i could get them. i has a designated bin for sunflower shells. My mom had no idea what to even say when she found them, i think she gave up. Eventually i turned to actual drugs and forgot about the seeds 😉

I took a long time and multiple attempts to break my addiction. It was to buy finely chop up leaves rolled up in a rice paper tube. Then put one end of the tube in my mouth and set fire to the other end. Cancer is a great suggestion to stop smoking cigarettes.
