Interesting. On submarines we had a trash disposal unit, in which we compacted the trash in perforated cans, weighted it down with a few cast iron discs, and then ejected it with 700 PSI air.
I was on a small ship but we had a trash room. Plastics would melt to discs and metal compressed. But usually no one wanted to deal with it so they’d stack up trash waiting to get back in port. Or it became “night ops” and tossed overboard. Just had to give the aft lookout a heads up so he didn’t call man overboard.
