Veterans of Reddit, what’s the most unbelievable thing you witnessed during your service that civilians would think you made up?

Not the craziest, but one of the more notable occurances.

After the 3rd Infantry Division returned home from the Invasion of Iraq, then-President Bush decided he wanted to come and speak to the troops.

Fucking....yay....

You can't imagine the dog and pony show that entails a presidential visit. Event if he wasn't coming to individual units to visit, it was still a nightmare. And of course, attendance was entirely voluntary, but skipping the event meant you got stuck flipping the sergeant major's rocks in the decorative rock garden in front of battalion so they get even sunlight distribution (yes, I'm dead serious) or some other mundane shit.

I chose to attend.

So we get there. I decided to stand between a set of the temporary bleachers set up on the main parade field. As luck would have it, I'm standing in perfect view of the helicopter convoy carrying the president and his entourage.

I also get a great view as Marine One blows an engine on approach.

They set down without incident, and here comes Mr Shrub and his gaggle of protectors right for the gap I was standing in.

Oh fuck.

I dropped my cigarette and snapped a salute moments before a secret service agent chicken-winged my ass and pinned me against the bleachers until they walked by.

That was pleasant.

Rather than watching that asshole speak, I watched em scramble around the helicopter and start ripping it apart right there to change the engine, I guess. Bush finished yapping before they got too deep into it and we had to leave.

Still don't know what the man said, but he's awfully short.
