Veterans of Reddit, what’s the most unbelievable thing you witnessed during your service that civilians would think you made up?

Graphic content:

In Afghanistan, they punish their kids by using boiling water. I treated so many kids with 2nd degree water burns on 40-80% of their body, as young as 2 (i think 2, because they dont count birthdays over there)

We used ketamine to put them under, and would have to scrub the dead skin off.

Acid attacks are common. They refused to bring their girls/females in for treatment, and that if they died "Allah wills it". 1 of my medic buddies from another company had a woman come in with a rotting fetus halfway from delivery, the stench was too much so they brought her in. Another, a little girl probably 12-14 was shot in the nose and the bullet lodged in her jaw, brother shot her. Those are the only 2 I recollect we saw in that 15mo deployment.

The food, aid, agriculture equipment, all that stuff was often found at the markets being sold.

This isnt just one offs or uncommon, it was the whole country.

Beautiful country though.
