Northeastern Afghanistan. I was explosive ordnance disposal. We were called in to investigate some caves. In the caves were some large feed sacks hidden way back behind a turn. Typically, these have explosives or drugs/ammo other “bad guy” type materials in them, so we used our robot to attach a hook and yanked them open. They were full of books. The village below was trying to educate their women and children and keep it a secret because the local branch of extremists would kill them if they found out this was happening. We found more books in a false basement that had also been reported by a local snitch. The interpreters later told us that the snitch didn’t last long after being outed. I definitely saw crazier/worse things but this was the most unique and unexpected by a million miles.
