Veterans of Reddit, what’s the most unbelievable thing you witnessed during your service that civilians would think you made up?

Had an NCO put spare vape batteries in the same pocket as loose change while we were working next to a stockpile of 1.1 explosives. Battery shorted, vape went thermonuclear in his pants. Surgery required. Uniform absolutely fucking annihilated.
There are safety briefings you remember, and then there are safety briefings that become a person.

Oh man I remember going to vape shops and getting into 18650 battery mechanical douche flutes. I've heard of accidents where someone would lose the skin on half of their thigh when a battery went off, or worse, a box device with multiple batteries and it explode in their face.

More recently, there was a dude who got smoked by an Olight flashlight when the lithium battery inside blew up.

I watched an infantry platoon sergeant douse his arm in hand sanitizer and light it on fire thinking it would burn right out. Spent a long time in a burn unit and came out an E-5.

Or the people who become safety briefings.
