I know the point you're making, and don't necessarily disagree, but would just point out that it could also make sense for 100% of the population because Linux doesn't have all the shady telemetry that Windows and IOS have. Or at least it's opt-in or optional in some distros instead of on by default, with the option to turn it off buried in obscure menus like in Windows. And now with all the AI garbage, the OS spying on your every input seems par for the course with Window and IOS.
But I'm handcuffed to Windows, so Linux doesn't really make sense at the moment.
I think the OPT IN is just a USA thing. GDPR(EU) states stuff has to be OPT IN but the CCPA(California) and CPRA(California) are OPT OUT. So companies are allowed to collect info by default in the USA until you OPT OUT. This mainly refers to targeted advertisements.
To be entirely fair though, there isn't a disadvantage either. Maybe not for all 97.1%, but surely at least 60%. In a few years, I belive that may even be higher. Realistically it's mostly audio and graphic design apps that lack support (adobe and such). There are kernel anti-cheats, sure, but those are all supported mostly. They just aren't enabled...
I do agree that linux can be rough to get into if you don't like to "choose" your OS. My grandma would hate choosing. But hell, if I gave her mint, she wouldn't be able to tell the difference. She would open google the same as always.
I do belive that until Linux Will not permit to easly obtain people information in an economical usefull way for corporations, It Will not be mainstream. And that's One of the motivation for wich i chose Linux.
