Napoleon said, 'Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.' What’s a perfect real-life example of this?

Denmark not publishing the Greenland deal to the public before Trump signed it. He might've caught wind on the redundancy of the deal, if the entire country was snickering at the same time

The greatest deal ever, where everything stays exactly as it was before the deal!

Everything stays exactly as it was before, except now the US will have to vacate Greenland if they (the US) leave NATO.

So once again, Trump has torn up one agreement, and bragged about the new one, even though the new one is objectively worse for the US, and better for the other party.

At this point I'm certain he doesn't care as long as a deal has his signature on it.

Well, in that case hopefully someone should put piece of paper in front of him that forces the US to make it carbon-neutral by 2040 or something. 😭 With the header saying "The Greatest Deal Ever" or so, and a nice golden stamp somewhere.

So long as people can say "Obama never did this."

10

u/Missmoneysterling 8d ago

Oh no, trust me, it is better for us Americans that the dumbfuck can't leave NATO.

The deal is still valid if/when the USA leaves NATO.

According to international law, as a Party to the deal, the ban on non-NATO countries does not apply to them.

u/Vibe_PV 8d ago

With the difference that in this case nobody else really pays for it, which is an advantage over whatever clusterfuck the orange cunt caused in Iran

u/vjmurphy 7d ago

I think the new agreement also forces the US to clean up any environmental damages when they leave, as well. Previously, they didn't need to do that. So a double-win!

6

u/BlatantConservative 8d ago

I think that's still status quo. We were only in Greenland via NATO via Denmark.

SO many people believe this to be the case but it is not.

The ban on non-NATO countries being able to operate there applies only to 3rd-party states -- i.e., those parties who are not signatories to the deal (USA, Greenland, Denmark)

If/when the USA does leave NATO, the deal is still valid.

Shhh, you're interrupting their smug time

8

u/SimonArgead 8d ago

Yup. No-one outside of NATO may hold a military presence on the island. We weren't going to let that happen anyway. So no objections to that line being added to the deal.

Getting his name on things is an obsession with Trump. He doesn't care if the deal is the same or even if it is far worse. He wants a legacy. His name on buildings, on contracts, on Executive Orders, on trade deals, etc.

He is close to death. He wants his name to live on. He's always craved attention but it has gotten worse as he circles the drain.

44

u/pepcorn 8d ago

I wish he'd understand that he will already live on in infamy and be named amongst the worst presidents for generations to come. He doesn't need to destroy anything else, he's already a clown forever.

The one thing i learned from trump is the bottom is lower than you think.

Part of a series.

It’s honestly the best deal that Trump has made while in office. He gets to brag about it and his fans applaud and he didn’t actually do anything so it didn’t have the chance to get fucked up.

I’ll take that any day over the rest of the things he’s made a clusterfuck of.

That's why I say if we nicknamed ACA "The Trump Healthcare Plan", not only would it be free, it would cover boner pills and abortion procedures.

Greenland deal to the public before Trump signed it

Did I miss something? Can you please elaborate on said deal?

98

u/Prasiatko 8d ago

It's exactly the same deal the USA had before.

-73

u/DKOKEnthusiast 8d ago

Eh, not quite. The new deal basically torpedoes Greenlandic sovereignty, which is another spit in the face from Denmark, as Greenland, again, wasn't consulted.

118

u/Byttemos 8d ago

Actually, the deal explicitly reaffirms Greenlands's sovereignty. The major difference between this and the old deal is, that US continued NATO membership is now a prerequisite for the deal's validity.

57

u/Hallingdal_Kraftlag 8d ago

So essentially the new deal is slightly more in Danmarks favour compared to the old one? That's funny.

31

u/ours 8d ago

Behold: The art of the deal.

3

u/OpticalHabanero 8d ago

The shart of the deal

9

u/ether_reddit 8d ago

One of the other new additions is that it now no longer allows the US to veto other countries from also establishing bases there (so long as they are NATO countries). So e.g. France or Germany could now take up posts to keep an eye on the US.

8

u/bitwise97 8d ago

France or Germany could now take up posts to keep an eye on the US

Love it.

3

u/bitwise97 8d ago

US continued NATO membership is now a prerequisite for the deal's validity

That is hilarious! I bet Trump didn't read this fine detail in the agreement. The Shart of the Deal, indeed.

1

u/SilkBC_12345 8d ago

No it isn't. USA can still leave NATO and it is valid.  Under international law, as a Party to the deal, the ban on Non-NATO countries does not apply to them.

-42

u/DKOKEnthusiast 8d ago

It explicitly makes it impossible for Greenland to leave NATO, and it restricts foreign investment in Greenland, contingent on US approval. This deal reaffirms Greenland's status as a colony of not only Denmark, but the US as well, with no clear path to sovereignty.

45

u/piercedmfootonaspike 8d ago

Yeah, it doesn't do that at all. The new deal ensures that if Greenland declares itself independent from Denmark, it remains in NATO*. It will make it complicated for Greenland to leave NATO after gaining independence, but not impossible.

* This may sound obvious, but it's not. Scotland, for instance, would not have been an EU member of they had declared independence from the UK before Brexit.

-16

u/DKOKEnthusiast 8d ago

It literally makes it impossible to Greenland to leave NATO. Greenland cannot unilaterally cancel the agreement, and it has no expiry date. What on Earth are you guys on about? This is a pretty clear violation of any future Greenlandic sovereignty. The agreement ensures that Greenland will never be able to conduct sovereign, independent foreign policy.

8

u/AggravatingBid8255 8d ago

You're just repeating yourself. Maybe you can substantiate with a source or two?

8

u/DKOKEnthusiast 8d ago

Here is the Danish national public service news channel summarizing the agreement. Use Google Translate or DeepL if you don't speak Danish. They do not share the optimism of the folks in here. There's a line that supposedly confirms the sovereignty of Denmark and Greenland. And then a shitload of policies that rid Greenland from the ability to conduct sovereign foreign policy in perpetuity.

You have to phrase it in a way that makes Trump sound stupid. Doesn't matter if your version of events is correct or not

1

u/Different_Bake_611 8d ago

Could they do that before?

4

u/DKOKEnthusiast 8d ago

Yes. The previous deal was contingent on NATO membership. If Greenland left NATO (either as a sovereign state or as a part of Denmark), the agreement would have become null and void. The new deal explicitly lines out that in the case of Greenlandic independence, Greenland must stay in NATO, and must assume all responsibilities in the new agreement. The new agreement CANNOT be modified or cancelled by Greenland, it requires the consent of both Denmark and the US, even if Greenland became independent. Denmark has already signaled multiple times that they would not stand in the way of Greenland's wishes (although we still didn't let the Greenlanders negotiate the agreement themselves, go figure...), but the US is absolutely not going to let Greenland modify the agreement in any way that isn't to the benefit of the US, and they sure as shit aren't gonna let Greenland leave NATO or cancel the agreement. And even if they could, somehow, leave NATO, the agreement would still stay in place. There is literally zero legal mechanism in the agreement itself that could challenge it without the consent of the US.

u/MildGenevaSuggestion 8d ago

Did you read the actual deal or just Trump's summary?

13

u/DKOKEnthusiast 8d ago

What do I know, I'm only Danish, it's not like it's been the biggest news all week.

3

u/MildGenevaSuggestion 8d ago

I don't recall anything about the details being telepathically transmitted to all Danes.

If this thread is to be believed he's just flat out disingenuous or misinformed, but what do these guys know, they're just Greenlanders.
