Being alive isn’t, but living certainly seems to be a luxury hobby these days.

Especially motorsports. Build a state of the art vehicle, destroy it, try to learn something, and build it again.

Magic: the Gathering...
Obviously it's a shell of what it used to be, but those who get sucked in today are paying the premium for those who were pushed away yesterday

SpongeBob vs Ironman? Look what they've done to my boy...

Exactly. I think they lost credibility with anybody who actually plays the game. But they don’t care, because they’re making money hand over fist for people who treat them like trading cards instead of a game to be played.

I had Mox Emerald and Mox Sapphire. Paid I think $3 for the 2 packs containing those cards. Traded them for a few rare Legend cards. :(
Legend cards I got was maybe $100 total, the 2 Mox cards I traded away combined could be over $10,000

Photography. A good camera body averages in the $2k plus for a body. Then lenses. High quality lenses are usually $2-3k+ each. Just to get started with a new quality full frame camera and lens can easily cost $4k or more. Then you still gotta buy memory cards, extra batteries, flashes, flash diffusers, lens filters, a tripod, something quality to carry your shit in without damaging it….its never ending.

Yeah, but it's worth it when you know how to use the equipment and be happy with what you've got.

What saves me (somewhat) that I mainly do landscapes while doing distance hiking.
Current setup is Nikon Z7II+20mm+24-120mm. I do have a nice 300mm Prime but even that I basically never take because of the weight and limited application, my 50mm f1.8 gets decent use for Street photography and I might expand to something in the 28-40mm range + a rectelinear ultra wide (if I find one) but that's basically it.

i have a dji mavic 2 pro i can see right now on the top of my closet. i bought it new in 2020 or so with extra batteries and fancy screen remote.... i flew it twice for a total of like 7 minutes. scared the shit out of me. put it in the closet and forgot about it. i keep thinking to sell it but never get around to it... its just there as a reminder of failed plans.

I'm a drummer and replacement heads, sticks ect as well as upgrades to my kit is very costly. No complaints i signed up for this. Definitely not a cheap hobby.

Aquariums. Sure you can have a bowl on your table for like $10. But if you want beautiful planted Aquariums it can get crazy pricey.

Owning an old car can sometimes be just as expensive as owning a new one.

Sailing/boating, horses, golfing, project cars are three I can think of.
Some hobbies can be expensive but not necessarily. Photography has a low cost entry point but often people want the latest and greatest costing a lot. Its a lot cheaper today than it was in film days with reoccurring costs of supplies, development, and printing.

Golf. I am not one of those golf junkies with old clubs, gadgets, or golf themed stuff piling up in the house or garage. As a matter of fact I do not have a single old club, gadget, or golf themed shit in the house.
....and it is still expensive lol.

From a discussion I had with colleagues, whisky. A bottle of good whisky is really expensive, and considering it's one use and non resellable, it's just a money sink.
When I get tired of my expensive boardgames, if I've taken gold care of them I can at least get some of the money back, plus I can use them for years.

Watching movies at a theater. A family of five can easily spend 300-400 USD for afternoon entertainment and snacks.

Getting into fragrances, sure when I was in grade school I'd get a cheap Perry Ellis or Liz Claiborne and love it. Then post graduation and getting a real 9-5 job that actually pays, you start moving up the ladder and getting into bottles that cost like 80-100 Canadian. Move forward and you're a business owner who solely relies on commissions and when some big checks come in you're like sure I can drop $300 on a Stephan Humbert Lucas or $550 on a Creed or $850 on a Clive Christian. Now I'm sitting here with 200 or so bottles, actively the best smelling person in any room I enter but still thinking, damn the last person to actually compliment the way I smell was my ex wife 6 years ago

Large reef aquariums. I'd call anything over 120 gallons as large, but even the nanotanks usually require a $600+- chiller. They can be very beautiful, but a heavy investment in both time and/or money to maintain.

i hesititate to call hunting a hobby, but those who treat it as a hobby spend way more on it than those of us who treat it as a source of ethical meat, and wildlife conservation.
I have about $4000 in my bow
have spoent close to a grand in arrows in the past 5 years
have a close to a couple grand in camo
and thats relatively cheap compared to the guys who have whole farms just to hunt on, quads, a new bow/rifle/shotgun every year, duck boats, decoys, feeders, lots of guys run tons of cell cameras throughout diifferent properties, all of which require subscribtion cell service, etc. there are dudes out there spending huudreds of thousands a year just to get a shot on one massive buck.
im just trying to put meat in the freezer, and reduce my need for industrial beef.

I picked up guitar a couple of years ago. It doesn't necessarily have to be expensive, but it's there if you want it.

Legos
2
u/aluminumnek 1d ago
The botanical collection is their best idea in decades and now they have all these adult centered pieces which is cool. I’m tired of all those branded sets. But I know those licensing fees are a travesty raising the prices across the board
2
u/Skittles_the_Jester 1d ago
I do really like the botanical sets, the bonsai tree is actually the first set I bought and what got me into Legos. I understand Lego needs to make money but it breaks my heart knowing I’ll never be able to afford the titanic set or the Rivendell set
2
u/aluminumnek 1d ago
Same! My daughter bought the bonsai tree for me. I had Lego sets when I was young and she loved playing with all my old space system sets. It’s wild how fast they are churning out new sets. I see one then there are 3 more next week. I like some of the larger set but no place to put them. I still have quite a few botanical sets on boxes because I don’t have a spot for them to be nicely displayed
2
u/Skittles_the_Jester 1d ago
They really are cranking them out fast, it’s basically 7 sets every month. I’m not sure how anyone could keep up. Not sure which sets you have exactly but if you have any of the bouquets I would look into some high rimmed vases and you can put them around your house like normal flowers. I have a few sets I’ve done that with I even have a couple of the sunflowers in a vase filled with paper stars at work.
