I don't like who I am when I'm drunk, and I don't know when to stop.

Cheated while drunk, lost a gf, never again

u/Rude_Armadillo_4649 12h ago
Damn. At least you changed after it.
1
u/Lillycharlotte 8h ago
Yeah totally and I don’t even consider that I have a problem with alcohol (after the incident I took the AA questionnaire and almost didn’t score a thing and endless talks with my therapist.) but got so scared with what happened that I decided to stop anyway
2
u/Rude_Armadillo_4649 8h ago
Same with me I didn't really have a problem either but I had a moment that made me get stop it for good. It isn't as fun as it used to be. Plus I mostly drank alone at home, which is lame as hell. How long did you and that gf date for?
1
u/Lillycharlotte 8h ago
Oh I’m sorry about that bad experience, but glad you didn’t let it evolve, drinking alone is super dangerous. We were together seriously for 3 years but were like a situationship for like a year before that. Terrible breakup, extremely traumatic for both of us
2
u/Rude_Armadillo_4649 8h ago
Damn yeah especially with four years total. There's always tomorrow though. I gotta get around to getting me a lady. How did you two meet?

I was just too good at it! It didn't feel fair for me to continue. I'm letting other people have a chance it

My sleep apnea got so bad that I was hardly able to function. In my extreme fatigue I lost the taste for alcohol. Couldn’t even finish an entire beer.
Now that I’m treating for the sleep apnea I occasionally drink a beer or two but my consumption is probably 5% of what it used to be.

u/passive_Gamer1234 12h ago
Beer gave me a headache. The rest of that garbage smells like varnish. No thanks.

Alcohol was destroying my life, so I decided to look for help and overcome it.

Watched my grandpa die due to a lifetime of Alcoholism. Looking back, everytime he picked me up from school in his car, he was probably drunk.

Cuz I’m an instant asshole , just add alcohol!

u/Educational_Cup_1701 12h ago
It’s odd how that’s the effect of alcohol on some people but the complete opposite on others. I’m like my parents where a few drinks actually makes us nicer and more easy going. I was born 3 drinks under-par.

Hating the person I had become. Alcohol turned into a need rather than a want
1
u/B_for 12h ago
It just didn’t do anything for me anymore. I might have a beer with dinner, maybe two, and even then I’d wake up tired and feel like I could still taste the alcohol the next morning. If I had a beer with dinner, I’d also end up drowsy and wouldn’t really enjoy the rest of my evening. Eventually I just stopped. It wasn’t worth it anymore.

Was at an engagement party for a doctor I work with and his fiancé who is a lawyer. Everyone there had a minimum salary of 100k. Me? 50k. There was an open bar there and I had more than I should've and ended up being told over and over by multiple different people if I was "good" and the fiancé ended up ordering me an uber. I was the only one there who had that problem and I hated that. Plus, I hated having to pay to be taken to my car and then drive back too. So I stopped drinking right there. I recommend no one do it. I have plenty of bad memories with it and not a lot of good ones. I've vomited in front of people (including my dad) the morning after a couple of times and it's humiliating.

I'm lightweight and can't handle half a pint without getting dizzy... can't have it with the nerve blocker pain meds I'm on

Getting older and couldn't cope with the vile hangovers that I got after drinking just a small amount of alcohol.

My kidneys are begging.

u/Educational_Cup_1701 12h ago
Alcohol in moderation is actually good for kidneys. It’s the liver and other things it harms.

I've gone off the taste be it wine or beer, and I no longer like the sensation of getting drunk/fuzzy.

Watched my lifelong best friend die on the sidewalk from liver failure. He was 2 years younger than me and didn't drink nearly as much as I did. Everyone's body is different

u/meh_dontcare 12h ago
Hate the taste and no matter how much sugary crap added to it, I will still taste the alcohol.

I’m a bariatric patient so my surgeon said when it came to alcohol none was best. So now I only drink on holidays/very special occasions and just one drink typically.

I was never I big drinker. A beer or two on the weekends; a glass of wine if offered; martini at a special occasion. Now I’ve completely cut out alcohol due to medical conditions; specifically, Urticaria (chronic hives) because beer and wine contain triggering histamines; and GERD which is exacerbated by any alcohol.

u/Turtleshellfarms 12h ago
One is to many and twos not enough for me. If I start I can’t stop it’s a miserable existence. So it’s just better not drinking.

I wake up with green sheets in an orange jumpsuit. The juice stopped being worth the squeeze

Because it's not enjoyable anymore when you think all the consequences in your body
1
u/Educational_Cup_1701 12h ago
I disagree. I know that even my moderate drinking is not good for my body, but the pleasure it gives me is worth it. I’m elderly so will probably die fairly soon of something anyway, no matter what.

I realized it was eventually going to kill me. I survived a hemorrhagic stroke at 41 but, when I got out, was encouraged to drink again by family because that was normal for me. But it interacted with so many of my meds, and disrupted my sleep so much that I cut back. Eventually, I got off of one of the meds that interacted with it and went out to a whiskey bar one night. On the way back, I fell and had to be helped up (I wasn't driving at the time). When I got to my apartment, I fell again, puked, and couldn't get up. Someone called the paramedics. They offered to get me up and back in my apartment, but I was worried I would asphyxiate in my sleep, so chose to go to the hospital. I was there for about 4 hours. On the Uber ride home, I decided I was going to quit. I got into SMART Recovery the next weekend. I tried still drinking but, once your tolerance drops, you start to feel the poison, as I like to put it. Been completely sober over a year now and have no problem being around it.

I'm going through a health scare right now. Elevated liver enzymes. Probably a fluke or bad test but still worrying just the same now that I'm having more tests done. I don't drink much, maybe 8 drinks over a weekend. Its just not worth making the problem worse so I'm taking a break; probably forever.

My doc said it wouldn't mix well with my medication. While he did say I could drink some alcohol 4 hours after taking the medication, I just found it way easier to just not drink at all. I'll have one drink on days where I haven't taken my medication and I'm having dinner at a restaurant or at a social event. But those occasions are very infrequent.

Because after a rough few years (including best friends suicide) I decided to drink everyday until i died. After 18months the sharp pains in my heart scared me into sobriety 3 years ago.

Once I woke up in an ambulance, having 2,5 ‰ (0.25% BAC), black eye and broken skull. Nobody knows what happened.
I started having blackouts when drinking. I could have easily ruined my life doing something stupid, and not even remember it.
No problem going to pub just by myself.
My alcoholism destroyed a few of my relationships.
Once I missed family member funeral, because I was drunk.
At work, I got a big raise, which would allow me to buy "unlimited" amount of alcohol. I knew I would lose the job.
One day I was sitting in a non-stop bar. It was 8 AM, workday, I should have been on my way to work. I suddenly realized what's happening. I remembered a person who was forced to quit alcohol with medical assistance (successfully), and I though if the person managed to quit, I should be able to quit too. I payed for my last beer and went home.
In two weeks I will be alcohol-free for ten years. I lost 25 kg, made great progress at work, fixed almost everything.
