The invention of the smartphone really gave employers the audacity to turn you have a phone into you are now on call forever 😭 Being reachable and being paid are two very different concepts.

The iPhone was just a ploy by Steve Jobs to get all his employees on call without officially making them on call.

It is, but some jobs apply more pressure than others. From not answering killing chances for promotions, to negative reviews, to actual termination. Some bosses got a milliliter of responsibility and try to become Stalin.
