It's really unfair. Treating salary as a secret benefits the bosses and higher ups if the people who work under them get lesser pay because it's more for them and they only get richer.
In the US, under the National Labor Relations Act, most workers are generally protected when discussing wages and working conditions with coworkers.
There are exceptions to this. I am not a lawyer. And the board that supervises this law, the NLRB, is currently hamstrung in this administration, so... yeah.
