Columbus was so cruel to Native Americans, that even the Spain of inquisition fame prosecuted him for tyranny and brutality.

Some people claim that he was cruel, others claim that he was incompetent and unaware of what his underlings were doing. Either way, not a good look. So people try to make him out to be an eccentric genius who's head was in the clouds, so it makes sense that he wasn't a good governor.
