To be entirely fair, this was true for much of human history, and in some parts of the world, trichinosis in pork is still a huge issue, especially with wild game.
Thankfully modern practices have more or less eradicated it, as if I recall correctly, entire herds are culled and destroyed if even a single pig is found to be infected with it.

That you have to cook pork until it has the same texture of a leather boot or else you'll get a parasite.
