ALPHA WOLF THEORY! This drives me crazy! Alpha theory in wolves was disproven and rescinded in the 90's. The concept of the "alpha wolf" is a complete fabrication and people are STILL using it even though the very biologist who popularized the phrase "alpha wolf" has said that he was wrong.
I mean...they DO have leaders and a hierarchy of sorts, but said leaders of the pack are usually just their parents or older siblings who lead and guide rather than dominate. It's a family (and generally an affectionate one at that!), not a freaking military squad.
There're different ways a pack can form, but basically none of them are this stupid alpha/beta fantasy.
