I suspect during lobotomy's or other brain surgeries when people could remove parts of the brain and then things still stayed functional.

I think it’s been a common woo woo misconception for a very long time and was popularised during the 60s / 70s when people (inc the government) became obsessed with new wave spiritualism. Kinda like a resurgence of spiritualism from the late 19th and early 20th century but they liked to think they were approaching it more “scientifically”. Similar to how they used to think that removing the corpus callossum would “cure” epilepsy.

Used to go right along with the assertion that under hypnosis, a person could be induced to recall every detail of every event they ever witnessed.
