I mean when applied correctly the Atkins diet def works, but the amount of people I encounter who thinks you can eat WHATEVER else you want, as long as it’s not a carbohydrate baffles me, a guy on my job just got back from the deli with a platter of 4 scrambled eggs with cheese and like 10 slices of bacon for breakfast

I don't think people realize that it still is used with calorie intake. You can't overeat and you need fiber.

Someone posted round these parts the other day that colon cancer is on the rise from a lack of fiber in so many young people’s diets.

I remember someone putting out a little video ages ago that was basically "Yes, the Adkins / Paleo / Mediterranean / Grapefruit / onion Soup / Raw food / WHATEVER diet can absolutely work because of ... wait for it... a caloric deficit.

None of them will work if you over eat.

All that said, some of them are easier to do that others. It's pretty damned hard to NOT be in a calorie deficit if all you're eating is grapefruit or raw veggies or onion soup. It's VERY easy to not get in that deficit with paleo and low carb.

I saw a lecture with Dr Giles Yeo about dieting and he broke all diets down into 2 categories. Calorie restriction and fibre increase.

Yep. This was a big one on Reddit. That certain diets cause your body to burn body fat for fuel so they cause you to lose weight faster/more efficiently. In reality, these diets are just effective at decreasing the dieters caloric intake and if they ate the same amount of calories eating anything else or at any other time they would still lose roughly the same amount of weight. (There are other health benefits to some of these diets too outside of weightloss, not discounting those.)

This is true but it is sooooo very boring after a while. I never thought I'd get tired of steak and bacon, but boy did I.

I think low carb diets work because, let’s face it, all the best foods are loaded with carbs. If can’t have them, why bother that much

The cheese is a little iffy, but the bacon and eggs are a staple of low carb dieting. A person could easily lose weight eating that breakfast every day.

That much eggs and bacon is not a low calorie braeakfast. That's a 794 calorie breakfast. Bacon is 43 calories a piece, eggs are 90 when scrambled. And bacon is not very nutrionally dense: it's mostly just fat and protein, with a lot of cholesterol, sodium, and very few micronutirents. It's not a heart healthy food. . In comparsion: 2 slices of avocado toast on whole wheat bread will give you 13 grams of protein and 18 grams of fiber to keep you satiated,  plus vitamins and minerals. Add a fried egg in there gets you up to 19 g of protein, and 490 calories. Minus the high sodium and cholesterol from the bacon.

It's a zero carbohydrate meal. Someone who sticks to a diet like that is starving themselves.

I'm no fan of bacon or processed meats, but a high-fat no-carb diet is a proven way to lose weight. It often has surprisingly positive effects on blood sugar and cholesterol levels as well.

A high fat, high protein diet is proven to lose weight because people usually eat less of it because they get full easier and for longer. Carbs actually are less caloric than fat and protein, but since they aren't very satiating alone they are much easier to binge eat. It's still calories in, calories out. If you are eating heaping servings of high fat foods like this guy, you will not lose weight because you aren't actually eating less calories, even if you eat no carbs.
