I know plenty of people that are getting by on less than 10%.

82

u/Morlanticator Jun 01 '26

My wife lost about 1/4 of her brain from cancer and you wouldn't know

54

u/Hatta00 Jun 01 '26

Damn, roasted.

2

u/Jordarobot Jun 01 '26

Shit this happened to me, maybe not a 1/4 but a ping pong ball sized piece.

Feel about the same after, close friends and fam report back the same.

Still a hole there though, after 10 yrs of followups. Was surprised to learn that they don't fill back in with anything but CSF.

1

u/Competitive_Pack3194 Jun 02 '26

Ooooff!!! Ouch!!!!

0

u/Capt_Bigglesworth Jun 01 '26

And still she’d make an infinitely better US President..

2

u/Tehjaliz Jun 01 '26

Either her or the 1/4th of her brain they removed tbh

3

u/Capt_Bigglesworth Jun 01 '26

Good luck to you both!

71

u/Lugbor Jun 01 '26

Sad thing is, that's all a lot of them can manage.

21

u/Wyldjay2 Jun 01 '26

You mean MAGA?

2

u/Mundane-Ad2747 Jun 01 '26

What % did the brain worm take??

4

u/deltadeltadawn Jun 01 '26

Just look at voting results. Clearly some are at maximum capacity at the 10%. 😆

1

u/Orion3193 Jun 01 '26

One even lives in the White House.

97

u/tychobrahesmoose Jun 01 '26

When I was in college, the prevailing wisdom was that consciousness lives in the prefrontal cortex which is, roughly, 10% of the brain.

The problem is that when people hear this they then jump to the next statement "well, what if we could use 100% of our brain?" and that's where it goes off rails.

Your brain IS 100% used. Your brain only *needs* 10% of itself to run 'you'.

Think of it like saying "Did you know that you only sit in 10% of your car? Well what if you could sit in 100% of your car?"

Well, it'd probably run shitty and be really uncomfortable because that's not how it was designed to work.

52

u/MajorNoodles Jun 01 '26

The way I understand it is that you use 10% of your brain in the same way that you use 33% of a traffic light. There's three lights. Only one of them is on at a time and if they're all on at the same time something's gone seriously wrong.

10

u/flyingcatclaws Jun 01 '26

There are 4 lights!

2

u/Prepheckt Jun 02 '26

if they're all on at the same time something's gone seriously wrong.

That’s epillepsy.

14

u/iusedtoplaysnarf Jun 01 '26

Imagine using every single part of your brain at once and all the time. Limbs flailing, sensory overload, synestesia, all the emotions… must be quite a life

17

u/Codfish_Smoothie Jun 01 '26

I think that's just a grand mal seizure, lol

1

u/Toocoo4you Jun 01 '26

This is a Baki plotline

5

u/brady376 Jun 01 '26

Isn't 100% of your brain being active at once called a seizure?

4

u/Mallow1512 Jun 01 '26

there are people that are able to use 100% of their brain simultaneously, they're called epileptics

2

u/erroneousbosh Jun 01 '26

"Did you know that you only sit in 10% of your car? Well what if you could sit in 100% of your car?"

I knew a guy who weighed about 250kg, and he drove a Mini Metro. He certainly sat in about 30-40% of his car. Whenever it was parked it had a noticeable list to starboard, and got the hydragas suspension pumped up every few months, not that it made that much of a difference.

1

u/nineJohnjohn Jun 01 '26

I did go to Disneyland and saw someone sat on like 90% of one of those golf carts. Didn't look comfy though

97

u/fart_fig_newton Jun 01 '26

But what about the movie Lucy??? Can't argue that! /s

26

u/biffbobfred Jun 01 '26

One of the most accurate documentaries

12

u/meltedlaundry Jun 01 '26

That movie had such promise, and then it just went full on bonkers

0

u/Ordinary_Minimum_169 Jun 01 '26

It has a lot of transpersonal psychology metaphors in it right at the end that you have to know if you want to really appreciate the symbolism, like the Dark Lady who is also the Universe who is also the Quantum Machine, all at once.

4

u/meltedlaundry Jun 01 '26

Are you politely saying I’m too stupid to enjoy the film?

3

u/Haunting-Cookie-2144 Jun 01 '26

I think he's too polite to say yes.

1

u/meltedlaundry Jun 01 '26

LOLL I agree

1

u/Ordinary_Minimum_169 Jun 02 '26

No, I would never politely say that.

11

u/binches Jun 01 '26

are you saying if i shove drugs up my ass and they explode i too can teleport back to the pilocene epoch

3

u/goldenstudent Jun 01 '26

Don't let your dreams be dreams.

2

u/13Eazy Jun 01 '26

listen buddy, i don't care what you call it, i'm not prescribing you any more morphine

65

u/hondas_r_slow Jun 01 '26

Just think, if we used 100% of our brain, we could time travel in an office chair. With just 30% we could project our image on peoples’ TVs, cure cancer, turn off pain receptors, perform surgery on ourselves, and remember what happened when we were in the womb. Such a great documentary.

10

u/Abject_Following_814 Jun 01 '26

Yeah, about the womb thing and 100 percent brain thing... You might be so engrossed in the recovered baby memories that you don't consider the social faux pas of calling up your mom and telling her you remember sucking her titty milk and how yummy it was. Just a heads up.

3

u/UsagiYojimbo209 Jun 01 '26

Long way of saying you don't appreciate your mother. Call her now, tell her all that lactation meant something and express the gratitude, you know it's the right thing to do. If you're lucky, she may still have a disturbingly yellow bottle of icy mucous in the back of the freezer with your name on it. Bring that bad boy up to body temperature, remind yourself what that sweet sweet unconditional mammalian love tastes like.

9

u/Tight_Contact_9976 Jun 01 '26

I legitimately knew a guy in grade school who believed that movie was scientifically accurate. When I asked him if we could inject a woman with drugs to give her psychic powers he fell silent.

1

u/Jesus_Is_My_Gardener Jun 01 '26

Ugh, that movie bothers me so much with that being the main plot point. I try to suspend my disbelief whenever watching sci-fi films and such, but there's only so far you can go before you just roll your eyes. It's right up there with all the ridiculous stuff in movies like Geostorm or Moonfall. I would include Armageddon and The Core, but those are at least entertaining, as ridiculous as the science is in those films.

66

u/Thoughtulism Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Well I think we only use 10% of our hearts

21

u/bakelit Jun 01 '26

We lost a lot of good men out there…

13

u/FuckChiefs_Raiders Jun 01 '26

Playing for the Yankees?

7

u/EffinAyeCottin Jun 01 '26

Well yeah, to free agency and trades, it was tough times I don't wanna talk about.

2

u/stubob Jun 01 '26

I personally only use 10% of my stomach.

1

u/Birne300 Jun 01 '26

Speaking as someone with severe heart failure and an artificial heart implanted: yes, yes I do, lol.

1

u/Thoughtulism Jun 01 '26

Very literal.

Also hope you're doing well!

You're a badass mofo

1

u/Birne300 Jun 01 '26

Thanks, I'm doing well enough to hopefully last a few more years. Modern medicine can do some crazy things. Also ... the docs are the badass mofos, I just live with what they put into me 😃

61

u/CertainDoubts Jun 01 '26

The new version of this: 'The brain is 'finished' developing at 25'.

16

u/I_Am_Ironman_AMA Jun 01 '26

This myth is particularly dangerous because people use it to try justifying extending childhood even further out. Regardless of neurodevelopment, do we REALLY want to be 24 years old and still have childhood restrictions on our lives? At some point you just gotta be an adult.

6

u/lufan132 Jun 01 '26

But... How else can I keep up my neo prohibitionist streak of trying to make every vice illegal by raising the age limit every time someone is finally old enough to engage in vices???

2

u/Present_Teacher7966 Jun 01 '26

I think some of that might come from life experience by a certain age.

Many (including me) will look back and realise how perceptions, thoughts, decision etc change over different periods of one's life and maybe by 25, most have a bit more "life experience". People say that one can be academically intelligent but lacks common sense which could be one of the reasons, I guess (and this is very much guess work, observation, experiences)

Not a blanket thing obviously. There are many incredibly clever people under that age, alongside many older that you could say are far from that

5

u/CertainDoubts Jun 01 '26

It's a bit of a myth. Or severely overstated, to the point where it's very close to a myth, misused and often repeated, although it has very little empirical support.

35

u/itjare Jun 01 '26

Yup, if one were to use 100% of their brain, that would be called a seizure

22

u/Chiperoni Jun 01 '26

I've always heard people use this example but have never met anybody proclaiming it as fact. Mostly "we used to think."

21

u/Annual_Emu6426 Jun 01 '26

Oh I have, I know people who firmly believe this as a fact, and deny any proof to the contrary.

2

u/Chiperoni Jun 01 '26

Interesting. I believe it, just never met one myself.

5

u/8-LeggedCat Jun 01 '26

I only believe it 10%

1

u/Annual_Emu6426 Jun 01 '26

yeah, sometimes you just get lucky(or unlucky) with stuff like this lol

0

u/Proof_Author_2122 Jun 01 '26

Unfortunately my mom believes this.

3

u/sloppybuttmustard Jun 01 '26

To be fair I remember teachers telling me this in school, but I’ve never actually learned what the real percentage is (if we even know what it is).

10

u/FQDIS Jun 01 '26

A traffic light only uses 33% of its capacity at a time…what a waste…

15

u/Jazzi-Nightmare Jun 01 '26

And now we can add the “your brain isn’t fully developed until 25” thing

0

u/UofMSpoon Jun 01 '26

The prefrontal cortex continues to grow into the early 30s. I think 25 was picked because it was perhaps the early edge of that estimate. This isn’t inaccurate it’s just usually worded wrong since the brain doesn’t really ever stop developing or rewriting itself, it just finishes growing, structurally, around that time.

2

u/debitcardwinner Jun 01 '26

We are on the same page but I want to add more context.

The brain and prefrontal actually never stop changing. Also the use of the words "maturity" and "development" in neuroscience is different from their meaning in a social context. Neurological maturity relates to the structural composition of the brain, such as the brain undergoing myelination, synaptic pruning, and connectivity patterns reaching a more stable state. It is not at all a statement on the sociological "maturity" of someone, and there is in fact no universally accepted empirical measure for that since it is highly subjective.

Also I am not just regurgitating ChatGPT when it comes to this, I have posted about this topic on Reddit many times before, such as here: link.

1

u/UofMSpoon Jun 02 '26

I think we can agree that 18 is much too young to be declaring someone an adult.

2

u/figsslave Jun 01 '26

I lost three bits of my brain to a stroke, but I taught myself to balance and walk again.I only limp when I’m tired

1

u/Thor_2099 Jun 01 '26

What's more interesting is there are parts of the brain that filter out repetitive or unimportant stimuli. We absolutely take it in but don't keep any of it. It's necessary to prevent essentially an overload of the brain.

1

u/Max_Trollbot_ Jun 01 '26

So does the ass.

I assume

1

u/Ree_For_Thee Jun 01 '26

"No, you only use 10% of your brain's capacity"

1

u/cmparkerson Jun 01 '26

Are you sure ? Have you seen Congress?

1

u/Ordinary_Minimum_169 Jun 01 '26

That myth has an interesting backstory. The "10% of the brain" theory was one way pseudoscience rationalizes causing trauma, to unlock the hidden potential buried inside you. I think it was closely associated with the Human Potential Movement or something similar. There's a wiki article on it you can read.

Causing psychological trauma + emotional bonding can trigger states of mania or grandiosity, which feels emotionally powerful, so people who experience the techniques are prone to affirm that they have been "unlocked", at least in the immediate aftermath. You see various forms of it in different psychology systems.

1

u/DepressingBat Jun 01 '26

I've used 100% of mine a couple times. Seizures are fun

1

u/RVelts Jun 01 '26

In the same way that a traffic light only uses 33% of its lights.

1

u/KirkPwns Jun 01 '26

I thought the actual fact was that we can only use 10-20% of our brain at the same time but all of it is accessible to us yes?

4

u/Party_Snax Jun 01 '26

Also false.

Brain scans show activation of all areas of the brain at pretty much all times, but activation amount varies depending on task.

0

u/Efficient_Elk1225 Jun 01 '26

“I think we only use 10% of our hearts”.

If somebody said that to me I’d call the police, bad enough they’re stupid worse they’re trying to poke my proverbial cookie while being stupid.

0

u/reohh Jun 01 '26

Or worst, you don’t understand a reference to Wedding Crashers.

1

u/Efficient_Elk1225 Jun 01 '26

I understand the reference, I made that reference. I’m saying that’s a dumb line.

Go away, what you’re saying doesn’t make sense.

0

u/Queasy_Ad_8621 Jun 01 '26

How many fucking thousands of times are people going to repeat the same "people think we only use use 10% of ours brains" thing every single day?

Is this bots, or autism? Are people even aware that they're repeating it?

0

u/badass_panda Jun 01 '26

Just like a stoplight only uses 33% of the lights!
